Chapter 5 - The Aftermath

The silence that followed Natalie’s arrest was deafening. The police had taken her away in handcuffs, screaming threats until the siren faded into the distance. Her lawyers had abandoned her on the driveway, already drafting statements to distance themselves from the Voss family.

Inside the mansion, Rosa collapsed onto the bottom step of the staircase, burying her face in her hands. The tears she had held back for years finally spilled over. The grief of losing Julian, the terror of the past four years, and the shock of the truth combined into a wave that broke her completely.

Lily, confused by her mother’s tears, patted Rosa’s knee with her small hand. “Don’t cry, Mommy. The mean lady is gone.”

Ethan walked over and gently knelt beside them once more. He placed a hand on Rosa’s shoulder. “Rosa. It’s over. She’s never going to hurt you or Lily again.”

Rosa looked up, her eyes red and swollen. “Four years, Mr. Harmon. I thought he didn’t want us. I thought I wasn’t good enough for him.”

“Julian loved you,” Ethan said softly. “He was trying to protect you from the toxic world we grew up in. He died trying to build a life with you.”

Ethan stood up and extended his hand to Rosa, helping her to her feet. He then looked down at Lily, who was staring up at him with those familiar, starburst-amber eyes.

“Rosa, things are going to change around here,” Ethan said, his voice firm and filled with authority. “You are no longer the housekeeper of this estate.”

Rosa’s heart dropped. “Mr. Harmon, please... I need the job. Where will we go?”

Ethan shook his head, a genuine smile breaking across his face for the first time. “You misunderstand me. You are the mother of Julian’s child. Lily is a Harmon. She is my niece. This house doesn't belong to just me anymore. It belongs to her, too.”

Rosa gasped, covering her mouth.

“Tomorrow, my legal team will finalize the transfer of Julian’s trust fund to Lily,” Ethan continued. “And until you find a place of your own—or if you choose to stay—you live here as family. Not as staff. As my family.”
