Chapter 1: The Descent

“Get your hands off my daughter,” Rosa’s voice didn’t shake, but it possessed a terrifying, quiet fury that stopped Natalie mid-stride.

Natalie turned, her silk robe rustling like dry autumn leaves. She scoffed, her perfectly manicured hand smoothing down her lapels. “She was snooping, Rosa. And she has something that belongs to me. This house has rules. If you can’t control your child, neither of you belongs here.”

“I asked you a question, Natalie.”

The voice came from the shadow of the grand staircase. Ethan Harmon stood on the third step from the bottom, his charcoal-gray suit jacket draped over one arm, his tie slightly loosened. His face was an unreadable mask of stone, but his blue eyes were fixed entirely on his fiancée.

Natalie’s demeanor shifted instantly. The sharp, venomous sneer dissolved into a fragile, victimized pout. “Ethan, darling! Thank goodness you’re down. Look at this. The maid’s child was practically going through my things. She has no boundaries. I was just trying to teach her a lesson about personal property.”

Ethan didn’t look at Natalie. He stepped down until he was level with Rosa and Lily.

Lily was still holding the gold button tightly in her small fist. Her large, chocolate-brown eyes welled with tears, but she refused to let them fall. She looked up at Ethan, her tiny bottom lip trembling.

Ethan knelt. A man worth eleven billion dollars, whose face regularly graced the cover of Forbes, dropped to both knees on the cold marble floor. He didn't care about the crease in his trousers. He didn't care about the schedule his executive assistant had meticulously planned for the day.

“Hey there, Lily,” Ethan said, his voice dropping into a low, gentle register that Rosa had never heard him use before. “What do you have there?”

Lily slowly opened her hand. The gold button caught the morning light. It wasn’t a standard clothing button. It was heavy, intricately carved with a crest—a roaring lion gripping a broken arrow.

Ethan froze.

The color drained from his face so fast that Rosa thought he might faint. His hand shook slightly as he reached out, his fingertips brushing against Lily’s palm but not taking the button. He wasn't looking at the gold. He was looking into Lily’s eyes.

Truly looking into them.

For four years, Lily had been a quiet fixture in the background of his home. He had smiled at her, given her occasional nods, and allowed her presence because he wasn't a monster. But he had never looked closely. He had never stood this near to her in the bright, unfiltered light of the morning.

Lily’s eyes weren't just brown. They had a rare, distinct amber ring around the pupil, shaped like a jagged starburst. A genetic anomaly. A trait so specific it occurred in less than one percent of the population.

It was the exact same amber starburst that Ethan saw every single morning when he looked in the mirror.

“Ethan?” Natalie’s voice cut through the silence, laced with a sudden, sharp note of panic. “Ethan, what is it? It’s just a cheap piece of junk she stole. Give it back to me.”

Ethan stood up slowly. The gentleness in his face vanished, replaced by a cold, predatory focus. He turned to face Natalie.

“Where did you get this button, Natalie?” he asked, his voice deceptively quiet.

“I—I don’t know! It must have fallen off one of my vintage blazers,” she stammered, taking a half-step back. “Why does it matter?”

“This button belongs to a custom-tailored suit made by Savile Row in London,” Ethan said, each word dropping like an anvil. “Only five of these suits were ever made. One belongs to me. One belongs to the Prime Minister of the UK. And one belonged to my older brother, Julian.”

Ethan took a step closer to Natalie. “Julian died four years ago in a hit-and-run. This button was missing from the jacket he wore that night. The police never found it.”

Natalie’s breath hitched. She swallowed hard, her eyes darting toward the front door. “Ethan, that’s... that’s a crazy coincidence. I must have picked it up at a boutique or—”

“Rosa,” Ethan interrupted, his eyes never leaving Natalie’s pale face. “Take Lily to my private study. Lock the door from the inside. Do not let anyone in until I come for you.”
