CHAPTER 7 — THE FALL OF THE STERLING EMPIRE

CHAPTER 7 — THE FALL OF THE STERLING EMPIRE

The courthouse doors burst open before the hearing had even officially ended.

Reporters flooded the marble steps.

Microphones chased every member of the Sterling family.

One question echoed above the chaos.

"Mr. Sterling! Did you really separate your son from the mother of his child?"

Richard Sterling refused to answer.

For the first time in forty years, the man who had dominated Boston's business world lowered his head and let security escort him away.

Inside the courtroom, Ethan remained frozen.

Judge Amelia Rhodes signed the emergency order.

"Temporary custody is denied."

She looked toward Olivia and Ethan.

"Until a final custody agreement is completed, Lily Hayes will remain in her mother's primary care."

Then she smiled gently at Ethan.

"The court encourages both biological parents to raise this child together."

It was not a victory over Olivia.

It was a chance to become the father he should have been from the beginning.

That afternoon, the board of Sterling Industries convened an emergency meeting.

Every director had watched the recordings.

Every investor had seen the headlines.

Richard entered expecting loyalty.

Instead, he found silence.

The chairman spoke first.

"In light of the evidence presented today, we are conducting an immediate vote."

Richard looked at the faces around the table.

Men who had built fortunes beside him.

Women who had defended him for decades.

None would meet his eyes.

The result was unanimous.

Richard Sterling was removed as Chief Executive Officer.

His voting authority was suspended pending multiple investigations into corporate misconduct.

He laughed bitterly.

"You think removing me saves this company?"

"No," one director replied quietly.

"We think removing you is the only way it survives."

Richard walked out carrying nothing except the coat draped over his arm.

For the first time in his life, no assistant followed behind him.

Across town, Charlotte Bennett watched the news from the penthouse she had shared with Ethan for less than two days.

The wedding portrait still stood on the fireplace.

She picked it up.

Studied their smiles.

They looked like strangers posing for a magazine cover.

Not husband and wife.

When Ethan arrived that evening, she was waiting.

Neither of them spoke for several seconds.

Finally Charlotte handed him the framed photograph.

"You don't have to apologize."

"I married a man whose heart already belonged somewhere else."

Ethan lowered his eyes.

"I never wanted to hurt you."

"I know."

She smiled sadly.

"But pretending wouldn't hurt any less."

She reached into a drawer and placed divorce papers on the table.

"I had my attorney prepare them this afternoon."

Ethan stared at her in surprise.

"You deserve to be with the woman you love."

"And Lily deserves parents who choose each other every day."

For the first time since the wedding, Ethan saw not an arranged partner...

...but a woman finally choosing her own freedom.

He signed.

Charlotte signed.

They shook hands.

There was sadness.

But there was no hatred.

As Ethan left, Charlotte whispered to herself,

"Now I can finally find a life that belongs to me."

That night, Ethan drove to Olivia's apartment carrying nothing except a paper bag.

No flowers.

No jewelry.

No expensive gifts.

Just three cheeseburgers, fries, and chocolate milkshakes.

Olivia opened the door and laughed.

"You remembered."

He smiled nervously.

"Our first date."

She stepped aside.

"I thought you'd forgotten."

"I forgot too many things."

"But not that."

Lily ran toward him.

"Daddy!"

This time Ethan didn't hesitate.

He scooped her into his arms.

She wrapped both arms around his neck.

"I missed you."

His voice cracked.

"I missed you too."

May you like

Even though they had only known each other for two days...

...it somehow felt true.
