CHAPTER 2 — THE DNA THAT COULD DESTROY EVERYTHING

CHAPTER 2 — THE DNA THAT COULD DESTROY EVERYTHING
The silence inside the private jet became unbearable.
The engines hummed softly beneath the polished cabin floor, but to Ethan Sterling, it sounded like judgment.
Charlotte waited.
She had always been patient.
That was one of the reasons Boston's elite adored her. She never raised her voice. She never panicked. She simply waited until people revealed themselves.
"Ethan."
Her voice was calm.
"I asked you a question."
He didn't turn from the window.
"I don't know."
Charlotte laughed once.
Not because she found it amusing.
Because she knew he was lying.
"You don't know... or you don't want to know?"
He finally looked at her.
"I didn't know Olivia was pregnant."
The words hung between them.
Charlotte's expression didn't change.
For several seconds, she simply studied his face.
Then she slowly removed her wedding ring.
The tiny click as she placed it on the crystal table echoed louder than the engines.
"We've been married for eighteen hours."
Another pause.
"And already another woman may have your child."
"It's not like that."
"No?"
She leaned forward.
"Then tell me exactly what it's like."
Ethan opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Because he couldn't explain the one thing he couldn't forgive himself for.
Three years earlier...
Olivia had come to his office.
She had cried.
She had begged him to cancel one business trip.
Just one.
She wanted one weekend together before his company merged with Bennett Global.
He had barely looked up from his laptop.
"We'll have time later."
Later never came.
Two weeks afterward, his father discovered Olivia came from a bankrupt family.
Another week later...
Olivia disappeared.
He searched.
At least he told himself he searched.
A few phone calls.
A private investigator.
Then another acquisition.
Another billion dollars.
Another excuse.
Eventually...
He convinced himself she had chosen to leave.
It hurt less that way.
Now the timeline screamed at him.
Lily was two and a half.
Olivia vanished almost three years ago.
The math fit too perfectly.
Charlotte broke the silence.
"How old exactly?"
He swallowed.
"Two years... six months."
Charlotte nodded slowly.
"So she was conceived before Olivia disappeared."
Another pause.
"You've done the math."
He couldn't deny it.
She stood.
Walked toward the cockpit.
Stopped halfway.
Without looking back she said,
"If she's yours..."
"...our marriage began with a lie."
Thousands of feet below...
Logan Airport had almost emptied.
Olivia watched the private jet disappear into the clouds.
Lily waved excitedly.
"The airplane!"
Olivia forced a smile.
"Yes, sweetheart."
Inside...
She was falling apart.
"Mama sad?"
Tiny fingers touched her cheek.
Olivia kissed Lily's hand.
"I'm okay."
But she wasn't.
Because seeing Ethan again had reopened every wound she had spent years stitching closed.
Her phone vibrated.
One message.
Unknown Number.
He deserves to know.
She froze.
Another message arrived.
You can't hide her forever.
Olivia's breathing quickened.
Only three people knew the truth.
Her.
The doctor.
And—
The phone rang.
Private Number.
She answered carefully.
"...Hello?"
A deep voice replied.
"He saw the child."
Olivia's blood ran cold.
"Who is this?"
"You've hidden her for two and a half years."
Click.
The line went dead.
That evening...
Aspen.
The Sterling honeymoon suite overlooked snow-covered mountains worth millions in real estate.
Neither bride nor groom admired the view.
Charlotte sat in front of the fireplace, holding a glass of wine she never drank.
Across the room...
Ethan stared at an old photograph on his phone.
Cape Cod.
Three summers ago.
Olivia laughing barefoot on the beach.
He zoomed in.
Her hand rested on her stomach.
He had never noticed before.
His heart stopped.
Was she already pregnant?
His phone buzzed.
Caller ID:
Margaret Sterling.
His mother rarely called.
"Ethan."
Her voice sounded strained.
"Your father collapsed."
"What?"
"He had a heart attack during the wedding reception after everyone left."
Ethan stood instantly.
"Why didn't anyone tell me?"
"Because your father insisted."
Silence.
Then she added something that made his stomach tighten.
"He kept repeating one sentence before the ambulance arrived."
"What sentence?"
Margaret inhaled shakily.
"He said..."
"'Don't let Ethan ever find Olivia.'"
Everything inside Ethan froze.
"What?"
"I thought it was delirium."
"But after what happened today..."
"I don't think it was."
The call ended.
Ethan slowly lowered the phone.
His father.
The man who had hated Olivia from the beginning.
The man who had celebrated when she disappeared.
The man who had arranged his marriage to Charlotte.
Had just confessed—without realizing it—that he knew something.
Something about Olivia.
Something about Lily.
Something he had hidden for three years.
At that exact moment...
Three thousand miles away...
Olivia unlocked the front door of her tiny apartment in South Boston.
The lights were already on.
She never left them on.
She stopped breathing.
Someone was inside.
Lily clutched Bunny tighter.
"Mama?"
Olivia slowly stepped backward toward the hallway.
Then she heard a familiar voice from the living room.
"You should have told him."
An elderly woman walked into the light.
Elegant.
Silver-haired.
Perfectly dressed.
Olivia's face turned white.
"No..."
The woman smiled sadly.
"I'm afraid it's time, dear."
She looked toward little Lily.
May you like
Then whispered the words that would change every life forever.
"I've waited two and a half years to meet my granddaughter."
