CHAPTER 6 — THE COURTROOM EXPLOSION

CHAPTER 6 — THE COURTROOM EXPLOSION

The courthouse steps overflowed with reporters.

Microphones.

Camera crews.

Headlines were already spreading across Boston.

BILLIONAIRE HEIR IN SECRET CHILD SCANDAL

WHO IS LILY HAYES?

STERLING FAMILY CIVIL WAR

Inside Courtroom Seven...

Judge Amelia Rhodes entered precisely at nine o'clock.

Everyone stood.

Richard Sterling arrived in a wheelchair, looking weak enough to earn sympathy.

Ethan knew better.

Olivia held Lily's hand.

The little girl wore a blue dress and carried Bunny under one arm.

She had no idea her future was about to be argued by strangers.

Richard's attorney rose first.

"Your Honor, our client seeks temporary custody to ensure the child's safety and proper upbringing."

He described Sterling wealth.

Private schools.

Trust funds.

Security.

Opportunity.

Then he turned toward Olivia.

"The respondent concealed the child's biological father."

Olivia stood before her lawyer could stop her.

"I concealed her because I was protecting her."

"From whom?"

She looked directly at Richard.

"From him."

A murmur swept through the courtroom.

Richard appeared offended.

"I've never harmed that child."

Olivia answered immediately.

"You harmed her parents."

Judge Rhodes raised a hand.

"Order."

Then Ethan stood.

"Your Honor..."

"I'd like permission to testify."

The judge nodded.

He walked to the witness stand.

For the first time in his professional life...

Ethan Sterling spoke without prepared notes.

"I failed Olivia."

"I failed my daughter."

"I believed lies because they were easier than asking hard questions."

He turned toward Richard.

"My father manipulated us."

Richard's attorney objected.

"Speculation."

Ethan calmly lifted a flash drive.

"No."

"Evidence."

Every head turned.

Margaret slowly stood from the gallery.

"I gave it to him."

She walked to the witness stand.

"My husband kept recordings."

Richard's eyes widened.

Margaret continued.

"I copied everything."

The courtroom clerk inserted the drive into the evidence system.

A recording began to play.

Richard's unmistakable voice filled the courtroom.

"Destroy every letter she sends."

Another voice.

"What if Ethan finds out?"

Richard laughed.

"He won't. By the time he realizes she's gone, he'll be too busy building my empire."

Gasps echoed through the courtroom.

Another recording.

"Make sure the investigator tells Ethan she left with another man."

Richard slammed his hand against the defense table.

"Turn that off!"

Judge Rhodes stared at him.

"Sit down, Mr. Sterling."

The final recording played.

Richard's cold voice cut through the silence.

"If she has the baby, we'll deal with the child later."

The courtroom erupted.

Reporters rushed for their phones.

Olivia covered her mouth, tears streaming down her face.

Ethan looked at his father as though seeing him for the first time.

Not as a powerful businessman.

Not as the man who built the Sterling empire.

But as the man who had stolen three years from an innocent family.

Judge Rhodes struck the gavel repeatedly.

"Order!"

"ORDER!"

When silence finally returned, she looked directly at Richard.

"In thirty years on this bench..."

"...I have rarely heard evidence this disturbing."

Richard realized, at that moment, that he had lost far more than a custody battle.

He had lost his son.

His reputation.

May you like

And perhaps, before the day ended...

His empire.
