CHAPTER 5 — THE FIGHT FOR LILY

CHAPTER 5 — THE FIGHT FOR LILY
The pounding on the apartment door grew louder.
BANG. BANG. BANG.
Lily jumped and instinctively buried her face against Ethan's shoulder.
He held her without thinking.
The tiny girl fit against him as though she had always belonged there.
"Daddy..."
The word was almost inaudible.
But Ethan heard it.
So did Olivia.
So did Margaret.
It was the first time Lily had ever called anyone that.
Another violent knock shook the frame.
A stern voice echoed from the hallway.
"Mr. Sterling, we know you're inside."
Margaret's face drained of color.
"They're Richard's attorneys."
Olivia frowned.
"Attorneys don't bang on doors like police."
"They do when Richard pays them enough."
Ethan gently handed Lily back to Olivia before opening the door.
Four men in tailored suits stood outside.
Behind them were two private security guards.
The oldest lawyer extended a sealed folder.
"Mr. Ethan Sterling."
"I'm Daniel Cross, legal counsel for Richard Sterling."
Ethan didn't take the envelope.
"What do you want?"
Cross remained expressionless.
"Your father has filed an emergency petition requesting temporary protective custody of the minor child, Lily Hayes."
Olivia stared in disbelief.
"What?"
Cross looked directly at her.
"Richard Sterling believes the child is the lawful heir to the Sterling family fortune."
Ethan's jaw tightened.
"So he wants my daughter now?"
"The petition states that Miss Hayes has concealed the child's identity for over two years and may be considered an unfit guardian."
Olivia laughed bitterly.
"I worked two jobs."
"I skipped meals so my daughter could eat."
"I protected her from your family."
"And that's unfit?"
Cross ignored the emotion.
"The hearing is tomorrow morning."
He finally handed Ethan the documents.
"If you fail to appear..."
"...the court may rule without you."
The men turned and left.
Silence filled the apartment.
Then Ethan slowly opened the folder.
His hands shook with rage.
The petition painted Olivia as unstable, unemployed, emotionally manipulative, and financially incapable of raising Lily.
Every line was a lie.
"He forged evidence," Ethan whispered.
Margaret nodded.
"He always does."
Ethan closed the file.
"No."
His voice had changed.
The quiet billionaire who spent years avoiding conflict was gone.
"My father started this."
"I'm ending it."
That evening...
Richard Sterling sat in his hospital room reviewing financial reports as though nothing had happened.
The door opened.
Ethan walked in alone.
Richard smiled faintly.
"I knew you'd come."
Ethan threw the custody petition onto the bed.
"You want Lily?"
"I want what's best for the Sterling name."
"You don't even know her favorite color."
Richard didn't answer.
"She likes yellow," Ethan continued.
"She sleeps with a stuffed rabbit."
"She hates peas."
"When she gets nervous, she twists her left sleeve."
His eyes burned with anger.
"I've known my daughter for less than three hours..."
"...and I already know more about her than you ever will."
Richard's expression hardened.
"You think this is about love?"
"It's about legacy."
"No."
Ethan stepped closer.
"It's about control."
Richard lowered his voice.
"If that child grows up with Olivia, she'll inherit nothing."
"I'll rewrite the trust."
"You can't."
"I already have."
Richard smiled.
"The board approved it last year."
Ethan froze.
The board...
Charlotte's father sat on that board.
Suddenly everything connected.
The marriage.
The merger.
The inheritance.
None of it had been coincidence.
Richard had built a cage years before Ethan ever walked into it.
Across town...
Charlotte Bennett entered her father's office without knocking.
Charles Bennett looked up.
"You should be in Aspen."
"I want the truth."
He sighed.
"Which one?"
"Did you know Richard separated Ethan from Olivia?"
Charles remained silent.
That was enough.
"You sacrificed my marriage..."
"...for a business deal."
Charles calmly closed his laptop.
"I secured your future."
Charlotte shook her head.
"No."
"You sold it."
She slipped off her wedding ring.
It landed on his desk.
"I'm done being one of your investments."
She walked out.
Neither of them looked back.
Late that night...
Olivia tucked Lily into bed.
"Mama?"
"Yes?"
"Is Bunny Man staying?"
Olivia smiled sadly.
"I don't know, sweetheart."
Lily yawned.
"I hope Daddy stays."
The room became very quiet.
Outside the bedroom door...
Ethan heard every word.
He silently promised himself—
May you like
No matter what happened in court...
He would never walk away again.
