CHAPTER 4 — THE WOMAN WHO REFUSED TO RUN ANYMORE

CHAPTER 4 — THE WOMAN WHO REFUSED TO RUN ANYMORE

Olivia spent the entire night reading every document Margaret had brought.

Each page tore open another wound.

Voicemail transcripts Ethan had never received.

Letters returned before they reached him.

Hospital records hidden under false names.

Even photographs taken by investigators hired to monitor her pregnancy.

Someone had watched her.

Someone had known exactly where she was.

Margaret wiped away another tear.

"I found these only after your father-in-law collapsed."

"You searched his private safe?"

"I've been married to Richard for thirty-eight years."

A sad smile crossed her face.

"I knew exactly where he kept his sins."

Olivia closed the final folder.

"So Ethan never knew?"

"No."

"Not once."

For three years Olivia had believed Ethan chose money over her.

Three years Ethan had believed she abandoned him.

Both had been manipulated.

By one man.

Across Boston...

Charlotte Bennett sat alone in the Sterling mansion.

The wedding flowers had already begun to wilt.

Her phone rang.

Her father.

"Is Ethan back?"

"No."

"He went to Olivia."

A long silence followed.

Then Charles Bennett spoke coldly.

"I warned you."

Charlotte frowned.

"What do you mean?"

"He never stopped loving her."

Charlotte's eyes narrowed.

"You knew?"

"I knew enough."

She gripped the phone tighter.

"You pushed this marriage anyway."

"It was good for business."

Charlotte slowly stood.

"So my marriage..."

"...was another merger."

Her father's silence confirmed it.

She ended the call without another word.

Then she looked at her reflection in the hallway mirror.

For the first time in years...

She didn't recognize the woman staring back.

Later that afternoon...

Ethan's investigator finally called.

"I found Olivia."

Ethan was already grabbing his keys.

"Address."

Twenty minutes later he stood outside a modest brick apartment building in South Boston.

His heart pounded harder than it ever had in any boardroom.

He climbed the stairs.

Apartment 3B.

He raised his hand.

Knocked once.

The door opened.

Olivia stood there.

No anger.

No tears.

Just exhaustion.

For several seconds neither of them spoke.

Finally Ethan whispered,

"I'm sorry."

Olivia looked into his eyes.

"I know."

Those two words shattered him.

"You... know?"

She stepped aside.

"Come in."

Inside, Lily sat on the living-room floor building a tower from colorful wooden blocks.

She looked up.

Her face lit up instantly.

"Bunny man!"

She ran straight toward Ethan before Olivia could stop her.

Tiny arms wrapped around his legs.

Ethan dropped to his knees, overwhelmed.

"Hi, Lily."

She proudly held up a drawing.

"Me!"

The picture showed three stick figures holding hands.

One small.

One tall with long hair.

One taller with dark hair.

"Who's this?" Ethan asked gently, pointing to the third figure.

Lily smiled as though the answer were obvious.

"My daddy."

Ethan felt tears sting his eyes.

He looked at Olivia.

She nodded once.

Barely.

Almost imperceptibly.

Then she whispered the words he had been both longing for and dreading.

"Yes, Ethan."

"Lily is your daughter."

The room fell silent.

Ethan covered his mouth as tears finally broke free.

But before anyone could speak again—

A loud knock echoed through the apartment.

Then another.

Much harder.

Olivia's face instantly turned pale.

Margaret looked toward the window.

Three black SUVs had stopped outside the building.

Men in dark suits were already getting out.

One of them held an envelope stamped with the Sterling family seal.

May you like

Margaret whispered in horror,

"Richard found you first."
