CHAPTER 3 — THE GRANDMOTHER'S CONFESSION

CHAPTER 3 — THE GRANDMOTHER'S CONFESSION

Olivia's entire body went rigid.

Lily hid behind her legs, clutching Bunny so tightly the stuffed rabbit's ears bent against her tiny chest.

The elegant woman standing in the middle of the apartment looked exactly as Ethan had described her years ago.

Margaret Sterling.

The only person in Ethan's family who had ever treated Olivia with kindness.

"How did you find us?" Olivia asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Margaret's eyes filled with tears as she looked at Lily.

"I've been trying to find you for almost three years."

Olivia's expression hardened.

"No. Ethan said everyone stopped looking."

Margaret lowered her gaze.

"Everyone... except me."

Lily peeked around Olivia's leg.

"Lady crying?"

Margaret smiled through her tears.

"Yes, sweetheart."

She knelt carefully until she was eye level with the little girl.

"You look just like your daddy."

Olivia immediately stepped between them.

"Please don't."

Margaret stood again, nodding.

"I understand."

"No," Olivia replied bitterly. "I don't think you do."

Silence stretched across the small apartment.

Finally Margaret reached into her handbag and placed a thick brown envelope on the dining table.

"I didn't come here to fight."

"I came to tell you the truth."

Olivia stared at the envelope.

She already hated it.

"What truth?"

Margaret took a slow breath.

"The day you disappeared..."

"...you never left Ethan."

Olivia frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

"My husband made sure Ethan believed you did."

The room seemed to tilt.

Margaret opened the envelope.

Inside were copies of emails.

Phone records.

Bank transfers.

Private investigator reports.

And one document that made Olivia's hands begin to shake.

A forged resignation letter.

Signed with her name.

"I never wrote this."

"I know."

Margaret nodded.

"My husband did."

Another document.

A fake airline ticket to California.

Another.

A private investigator's report stating Olivia had "started a new relationship."

It was all fabricated.

"My husband paid people to disappear you from Ethan's life."

Olivia could barely breathe.

"Why?"

Margaret answered without hesitation.

"Because you loved him."

"And because you couldn't be controlled."

Three years earlier...

Richard Sterling had summoned Olivia to his office.

He never offered her a seat.

"You'll never belong in this family."

Olivia had stood proudly.

"I love your son."

"Exactly."

Richard had slid a check across the desk.

Five million dollars.

"Leave."

She pushed it back.

"No."

His smile disappeared.

"You'll regret that answer."

She still remembered his final words.

"If you won't leave willingly..."

"...I'll make Ethan believe you already have."

At the time she thought it was only a threat.

Now she realized...

It had been a promise.

Aspen...

Ethan couldn't sleep.

His father's words echoed endlessly.

Don't let Ethan ever find Olivia.

At three in the morning he quietly left the honeymoon suite.

Charlotte wasn't asleep.

She watched from the bedroom door as he packed a small bag.

"Where are you going?"

"Boston."

She already knew.

"To Olivia."

He stopped.

"I need answers."

Charlotte folded her arms.

"So do I."

He looked at the wedding photograph still sitting on the dresser.

It had been taken less than twenty-four hours earlier.

Neither of them looked happy.

"I'll come back."

Charlotte's laugh was painfully soft.

"I don't think you will."

Before sunrise...

Ethan's private jet landed back in Boston.

Instead of going home...

He drove straight to the hospital.

Richard Sterling had survived the heart attack.

But when Ethan entered the intensive care room...

His father looked frightened for the first time in his life.

"You."

Richard whispered.

"You saw her."

Ethan stepped closer.

"You knew."

Richard closed his eyes.

"I protected this family."

"You destroyed it."

"I saved your future."

"My daughter is part of my future!"

The words escaped before Ethan realized he had spoken them.

Both men froze.

Richard slowly opened his eyes.

"So..."

"...you believe she's yours."

Ethan leaned over the hospital bed.

"I want one answer."

"Did Olivia leave me..."

"...or did you make her disappear?"

May you like

Richard remained silent.

That silence was answer enough.
