CHAPTER 7: The Evidence That Ended Every Lie

CHAPTER 7: The Evidence That Ended Every Lie

Melissa immediately connected her laptop to the television in Richard's living room.

The hotel security footage began to play.

A timestamp in the upper corner read:

5:17 A.M.

The grainy video showed Selena leaving the elevator carrying her backpack.

She disappeared briefly into her room.

Three minutes later...

Another figure entered the hallway.

Hunter.

He wore a dark hoodie pulled low over his face.

He stopped outside Selena's hotel room.

Richard leaned closer.

"He followed her..."

Melissa nodded.

"He used the location-sharing app on her phone."

Selena froze.

"I deleted that app months ago."

Melissa looked at her.

"You deleted the app."

"You didn't remove his access."

Everyone watched in silence.

Hunter bent toward the hotel door.

Then he slowly turned the handle.

It didn't open.

Locked.

He looked around the hallway.

No one was there.

Then he reached into his jacket.

"What is he holding?" Richard asked.

Melissa paused the footage.

The image zoomed in.

A small plastic bottle.

The hotel manager had later identified it as industrial-strength super glue recovered from a trash can on the same floor.

Selena covered her mouth.

"No..."

The video resumed.

Hunter squeezed glue into the hotel room's exterior lock.

Then he quietly walked away.

Silence filled the room.

Richard's face darkened.

"He wanted to trap you inside."

Melissa nodded grimly.

"If Selena hadn't left when she did..."

"The door wouldn't have opened from the outside once the glue hardened."

Selena felt sick.

"My defense..."

"He wanted me to miss it."

Melissa looked at her.

"That wasn't the worst part."

She opened another file.

"The hotel maintenance records."

A technician had been called that morning after Selena checked out.

His report read:

'Room lock intentionally damaged with adhesive. Required complete replacement.'

The timestamp matched Hunter's visit exactly.

The prosecutor moved quickly.

Within twenty-four hours, additional charges were filed.

Attempting to interfere with an official academic proceeding.

Evidence of stalking.

Property damage.

Unlawful tracking through electronic means.

Hunter's attorney advised him to negotiate.

For the first time in his life...

Hunter realized money could not erase consequences.

One week later...

The courtroom was overflowing.

Journalists filled every available seat.

Women's advocacy organizations attended.

University students lined the back wall.

Barbara entered wearing jail-issued clothing.

She no longer looked powerful.

Hunter followed in a dark suit.

He looked ten years older.

The judge reviewed the evidence patiently.

Then came the hotel footage.

No explanation survived it.

Hunter claimed he only wanted to "talk."

The prosecutor calmly asked,

"With a bottle of super glue?"

Hunter had no answer.

Then Selena testified.

She spoke without raising her voice.

She described the years of manipulation.

The financial theft.

The affair.

The night her husband held her down while his mother cut away pieces of her identity.

No tears.

No anger.

Only truth.

When she finished...

The courtroom remained silent.

Even Barbara avoided looking at her.

Then Richard stood.

He had not planned to speak.

But the judge permitted a brief victim-impact statement from Selena's family.

Richard faced Hunter.

"When my daughter was born..."

"I promised I would teach her to stand on her own feet."

He paused.

"I never imagined I would also have to teach her how to stand again after someone she loved knocked her down."

He turned toward the judge.

"No father should watch his child apologize for being intelligent."

"I ask this court to ensure no other woman has to endure what my daughter survived."

There was not a dry eye in the gallery.
