CHAPTER 6: The Truth Barbara Never Wanted Known

CHAPTER 6: The Truth Barbara Never Wanted Known
Three days later...
Barbara sat inside the county detention center.
The arrogance that had defined her for decades had disappeared.
She had expected Hunter to post bail immediately.
Instead...
She learned he couldn't afford it.
Most of his accounts had been frozen after Selena's attorney filed emergency motions regarding the missing research funds.
Barbara slammed her hand against the interview room table.
"This is ridiculous!"
"They're treating me like a criminal!"
The guard answered without emotion.
"You've been charged."
"That's how the process works."
Barbara looked away.
For the first time in years...
She felt powerless.
Meanwhile, Selena met with her attorney.
Richard sat beside her.
Attorney Melissa Rhodes organized several thick files.
"I'll be direct."
She looked at Selena.
"Your case is stronger than I expected."
"Why?"
Melissa slid photographs across the table.
Pictures of bruises on Selena's wrists.
Medical reports documenting abrasions around her scalp.
Financial records.
Text messages.
Emails.
Security footage from the apartment building showing Selena leaving before dawn carrying only a backpack.
"This wasn't one isolated incident."
Melissa spoke quietly.
"This was a pattern."
Selena lowered her eyes.
She knew she couldn't deny it anymore.
Melissa continued.
"We interviewed your former neighbors."
"They heard arguments for years."
"One witness remembers Hunter yelling because you received another research grant."
Richard clenched his fists.
Another neighbor described Barbara's previous visits.
According to her statement...
Barbara often referred to Selena as "the investment that failed."
Not daughter-in-law.
Not family.
An investment.
Someone whose education had threatened the future Barbara imagined for her son.
Melissa opened one final envelope.
"This may be the most important evidence."
Inside was a handwritten journal.
Selena recognized it instantly.
"My notebook..."
Melissa nodded.
"The police recovered it from your home."
Between research notes...
Selena had written private entries over several years.
One page read:
"Hunter apologized today for screaming at me. He said stress made him lose control. I want to believe him."
Another:
"Barbara said no man wants a wife smarter than he is. Hunter didn't disagree."
Another:
"Sometimes I wonder whether I'm disappearing piece by piece."
Richard quietly removed his glasses.
His eyes filled with tears.
"I should have come sooner."
Selena reached for his hand.
"You came when I finally needed someone to believe me."
Later that evening...
A black SUV stopped outside Richard's house.
A middle-aged woman stepped out.
She looked exhausted.
She carried no makeup.
No jewelry.
Only regret.
Selena opened the door cautiously.
The woman immediately burst into tears.
"I'm Hunter's aunt."
"My name is Diane."
"I know you have every reason to hate this family..."
"...but there's something you deserve to know."
Richard remained beside his daughter.
"Speak."
Diane took a shaky breath.
"Barbara did this before."
Everyone froze.
"What?"
Diane nodded slowly.
"Not exactly like this..."
"But she destroyed every woman Hunter ever loved."
She described one girlfriend Barbara had convinced to leave by secretly destroying her graduate school applications.
Another fiancée whose business Barbara sabotaged by spreading lies to investors.
A third woman who ended the relationship after months of emotional abuse.
"Hunter always chose his mother."
"Every single time."
Selena felt a chill run through her body.
"So I was never the problem."
Diane shook her head.
"No."
"You were simply the first woman strong enough to survive her."
As silence filled the room, Melissa's phone suddenly rang.
She answered, listened for several seconds, then looked at Selena with a mixture of satisfaction and surprise.
"The prosecutor just called."
"They're adding new charges."
Richard frowned.
"What changed?"
Melissa smiled faintly.
"Someone from the hotel where Selena stayed the night before her defense just turned over security footage."
"What does it show?"
Melissa looked directly at Selena.
"It proves Hunter followed you there."
May you like
"He stood outside your hotel room for nearly an hour..."
"...and what he did next may guarantee he never walks free without facing far more serious consequences."
