CHAPTER 5: An Offer That Changed Everything

CHAPTER 5: An Offer That Changed Everything
The hallway had finally begun to empty.
Police officers escorted Barbara toward the elevator while reporters gathered outside the science building after word of the incident spread across campus.
Hunter remained frozen exactly where he stood.
No one approached him anymore.
The same professors who had once shaken his hand walked past without acknowledging his existence.
Selena barely noticed.
She was exhausted.
The emotional weight of the last twenty-four hours pressed down on her like a mountain.
Then the woman in the gray suit stepped forward.
She extended her hand.
"Dr. Selena Carter?"
Selena accepted the handshake cautiously.
"Yes."
"My name is Eleanor Grant."
She opened a leather case and presented an identification badge bearing the university seal.
"I'm the Chair of the University's Board of Trustees."
Professor Collins smiled respectfully.
"Eleanor flew in this morning after hearing about your defense."
Eleanor nodded.
"I originally came because your dissertation has attracted international attention."
She paused.
"I certainly wasn't expecting this."
Her eyes briefly rested on Selena's damaged hair.
Then she continued.
"I've spent thirty years working in higher education."
"I've seen plagiarism."
"I've seen academic fraud."
"I've seen careers destroyed."
"But today..."
"I witnessed something I've never seen before."
Selena looked confused.
"What do you mean?"
"I watched a woman defend eight years of research only hours after surviving a violent assault."
"You didn't ask for sympathy."
"You didn't ask for extra time."
"You simply presented extraordinary work."
Eleanor smiled.
"That tells me far more about your character than your dissertation ever could."
She removed another folder.
"This morning the Board voted unanimously."
Professor Collins looked surprised.
"So quickly?"
Eleanor nodded.
"The vote was unanimous after reading her external evaluations."
She handed Selena an official letter.
Selena unfolded it with trembling fingers.
Halfway through the first page, she stopped breathing.
"No..."
Her voice cracked.
"This can't be real."
Richard leaned closer.
"What is it?"
Selena looked up in disbelief.
"They're offering me..."
"...a tenure-track assistant professorship."
The hallway erupted again.
Graduate students clapped.
Several professors smiled broadly.
One whispered,
"Straight out of a doctoral defense..."
"That's almost unheard of."
Eleanor laughed softly.
"Normally, yes."
"But extraordinary candidates receive extraordinary opportunities."
"There is one condition."
Selena swallowed.
"What condition?"
"You accept because you earned it."
Tears filled Selena's eyes.
For years she had imagined searching for temporary positions across the country.
Instead...
Her dream university wanted her to stay.
Before she could answer, a familiar voice interrupted.
"No!"
Everyone turned.
Hunter hurried toward them.
His face was pale.
His eyes were bloodshot.
"You can't accept that."
Selena stared at him.
"I can't?"
"We're married."
"My job is here."
"My life is here."
"If you become a professor, what happens to us?"
Selena answered calmly.
"What happened to us..."
"...was last night."
Hunter's shoulders slumped.
"I made mistakes."
"I'll change."
"I promise."
Richard stepped forward.
"My daughter has spent years changing herself to make room for you."
"It's your turn to live with the consequences."
Hunter ignored him.
He looked only at Selena.
"I love you."
Selena almost laughed.
"Love?"
"You held me down while your mother attacked me."
"You stole my research money."
"You cheated on me."
"You tried to destroy the most important day of my life."
She took one step closer.
"Please don't insult the word 'love.'"
Hunter had no answer.
That afternoon, Selena signed the university contract.
When she finished, Eleanor shook her hand.
"Welcome, Professor Carter."
The title felt unreal.
Less than twelve hours earlier, Barbara had insisted women belonged only in the kitchen.
Now...
The same woman Barbara had tried to humiliate had become the university's newest professor.
Across town...
Hunter's phone rang again.
This time it was his employer.
"Don't come back."
"What?"
"The Board reviewed the video."
"We can't have someone associated with violence representing our company."
Hunter closed his eyes.
"You fired me?"
"We're terminating your employment effective immediately."
The call ended.
Before he could process it...
Another notification arrived.
His bank.
His mortgage lender.
His business partner.

Everything was beginning to collapse.
And it had only been one day.
