CHAPTER 4: The Arrest

CHAPTER 4: The Arrest

"Barbara Whitmore?"

The older woman lifted her chin defiantly.

"Yes."

The police officer opened a small notebook.

"Witnesses state that you intentionally cut Dr. Selena Carter's hair against her will while your son restrained her."

Barbara snorted.

"Oh, for heaven's sake."

"I trimmed her hair."

"That's hardly a crime."

The younger officer spoke quietly.

"Did she consent?"

Barbara hesitated.

"...No."

"Were scissors used?"

"...Yes."

"Was she prevented from leaving?"

Barbara instinctively looked at Hunter.

That single glance answered every remaining question.

The officer wrote one final note.

"Thank you."

Hunter suddenly stepped forward.

"Officer, this has gotten completely out of hand."

"My mother is elderly."

"This can be settled privately."

Richard smiled without warmth.

"So could the assault."

"You chose otherwise."

The officers requested everyone's statements.

The graduate student handed over the livestream recording.

Two professors confirmed Barbara's confession.

Three students described Hunter trying to seize the phone.

The hotel receipt Selena had saved proved she fled her own home that night.

Then Professor Collins quietly placed something on the table.

A small plastic evidence bag.

Inside...

Several uneven locks of Selena's hair.

"They were still attached to Dr. Carter's jacket."

"I thought they might matter."

Barbara visibly paled.

Reality was catching up.

Hunter's phone suddenly began vibrating.

Again.

Again.

Again.

He glanced down.

His manager.

His business partner.

His biggest client.

More notifications flooded the screen.

He opened social media.

The livestream clip had already spread everywhere.

Millions of views.

Doctoral student attacked by husband and mother-in-law before dissertation defense.

Professor calls police after shocking confession.

Academic community rallies behind researcher.

The comments were merciless.

Fire him.

Charge them both.

Protect women in academia.

Hunter refreshed the page.

The number kept climbing.

His breathing became shallow.

"My career..."

Barbara whispered,

"This is all because she couldn't stay home."

Selena looked directly into her eyes.

"No."

"This happened because you believed cruelty was your right."

An officer approached Hunter.

"Sir..."

"We also need to ask about the allegation that you physically restrained your wife."

Hunter shook his head frantically.

"I wasn't hurting her."

"I was just holding her still."

The hallway fell silent once again.

He realized too late what he had admitted.

The officer closed his notebook.

"I understand."

"You've just confirmed the witness statements."

Hunter covered his face.

Barbara finally lost her composure.

She pointed at Selena and screamed,

"You've destroyed this family!"

Selena answered with a calmness that frightened everyone more than anger would have.

"No."

"You destroyed it the moment you believed my dreams threatened your son's pride."

Barbara tried to step toward her.

The officers immediately intercepted her.

One officer took a pair of handcuffs from his belt.

"Barbara Whitmore..."

"Based on the evidence currently available, you are under arrest on suspicion of assault and unlawful restraint, pending further investigation."

The metallic click echoed through the hallway.

Barbara's face turned ashen.

"You can't arrest me!"

"I'm his mother!"

"No," the officer replied evenly.

"Today, you're a suspect."

As Barbara was escorted away, she twisted around one last time, expecting Hunter to defend her.

He didn't move.

He simply stood frozen, watching everything he had built collapse in front of him.

Then Richard stepped beside his daughter.

He gently placed his suit jacket over her shoulders.

"You don't have to fight alone anymore."

Selena leaned into her father's embrace for the first time in years.

She whispered only three words.

"I'm finally free."

But neither of them noticed the woman standing quietly at the end of the hallway.

She wore an elegant gray suit and held a leather briefcase embossed with the seal of the university's Board of Trustees.

She had watched every second.

And the offer she was about to make Selena would change not only her future—but the future of everyone who had tried to silence her.
