CHAPTER 2: The Defense That Changed Everything

CHAPTER 2: The Defense That Changed Everything

Selena paused outside the heavy oak doors of the doctoral defense room.

Her hand hovered over the handle.

Inside, years of sacrifice waited.

Outside, humiliation still clung to her skin.

She could still feel Barbara's scissors scraping against her scalp.

Still hear Hunter's voice.

"Women don't belong here."

She inhaled once.

Then opened the door.

The room fell silent.

Nearly forty people sat inside.

Members of the doctoral committee.

Faculty from different departments.

Graduate students.

Friends.

Researchers who had cited her work.

Everyone turned toward the woman entering with an uneven haircut that looked as though someone had attacked her in the dark.

Several people exchanged shocked glances.

Professor Miriam Collins, the committee chair, stood halfway from her seat.

"Selena..."

Her voice softened.

"What happened to you?"

Every eye focused on Selena.

She could lie.

She could say it was an accident.

She could protect her husband one last time.

Instead...

She smiled faintly.

"I'd like to begin my defense first."

The room remained completely still.

Professor Collins slowly nodded.

"Very well."

"Whenever you're ready."

Selena connected her laptop.

Her hands shook so violently she almost dropped the remote.

The first slide appeared.

Eight Years of Research.

Her own name beneath the title.

For one terrifying second...

Her mind went blank.

Then she remembered every night she had stayed awake until dawn.

Every rejected paper.

Every failed experiment.

Every conference where she had been the only woman presenting.

Every promise she had made to herself.

The words returned.

One sentence.

Then another.

Soon she wasn't thinking about Hunter.

Or Barbara.

She was talking about science.

About discovery.

About evidence.

About truth.

For ninety minutes she answered question after question.

The committee became more engaged with every response.

Professor Alvarez interrupted only to ask for deeper explanations.

Professor Singh smiled several times while taking notes.

Professor Kim whispered to another examiner,

"Remarkable."

By the end of the presentation, even the students sitting in the back had stopped checking their phones.

They were listening.

Completely.

Then came the questioning.

The hardest part.

Professor Collins folded her hands.

"Candidate Selena Carter..."

"Can you explain why your methodology contradicts the prevailing model published five years ago?"

Selena answered without hesitation.

Another professor challenged her statistical analysis.

She defended every calculation.

Another questioned her interpretation.

She cited studies from memory.

Page numbers.

Publication years.

Journal volumes.

One by one...

Every objection disappeared.

Nearly two hours later, Professor Collins looked around the table.

"Any further questions?"

Silence.

She smiled.

"I have none."

Professor Alvarez leaned back.

"I don't either."

Professor Kim nodded.

"Nor do I."

The committee asked Selena to step outside while they voted.

As the door closed behind her...

Her knees finally weakened.

She sat alone on a hallway bench.

The adrenaline drained from her body.

She touched the uneven strands of hair above her ear.

For the first time that morning...

She cried.

Not because of Barbara.

Not because of Hunter.

But because she had almost believed them.

Almost believed she wasn't enough.

Twenty minutes later...

The doors opened.

Professor Collins appeared.

She was smiling.

A real smile.

"Congratulations, Dr. Selena Carter."

The hallway erupted in applause.

Students cheered.

Several professors shook her hand.

One hugged her.

Professor Collins whispered,

"Your defense was unanimous."

Selena covered her mouth.

Doctor.

After eight years...

She had finally earned the title.

Just as photographers from the university communications office stepped forward...

The doors at the end of the hallway slammed open.

Hunter stormed inside.

Barbara followed close behind.

Both looked furious.

Hunter had obviously rushed over without shaving.

Barbara still wore yesterday's coat.

They scanned the crowd until they found Selena.

"There you are!"

Hunter shouted loudly enough for the entire hallway to hear.

"I told you not to come!"

The applause stopped instantly.

Dozens of faces turned toward them.

Hunter marched straight toward Selena.

"You've embarrassed me enough."

"Let's go home."

He reached for her wrist.

Before he could touch her...

Someone stepped between them.

Professor Collins.

"You need to leave."

Hunter scoffed.

"This is between my wife and me."

Barbara pointed directly at Selena's head.

"Look at her!"

"She humiliated herself!"

"No respectable woman behaves like this."

Professor Collins frowned.

"Excuse me?"

Barbara folded her arms proudly.

"I cut her hair."

A stunned silence swept through the hallway.

No one spoke.

Barbara continued as though she had confessed to watering flowers.

"I was teaching her humility."

Several professors stared in disbelief.

One graduate student quietly began recording on her phone.

Hunter noticed too late.

He reached toward the student.

"Turn that off!"

She stepped backward.

"No."

Professor Collins' expression changed completely.

Her voice became ice.

"You assaulted one of my doctoral candidates."

Barbara laughed.

"Assault?"

"Don't be dramatic."

"She's my daughter-in-law."

"I can discipline her however I want."

A horrified murmur spread through the crowd.

Hunter suddenly realized how bad this sounded.

He grabbed Barbara's arm.

"Mom..."

But she wasn't finished.

"Women who chase careers destroy families."

"I was saving my son's marriage."

The words echoed through the marble hallway.

Every professor heard them.

Every student.

Every staff member.

Hunter's face turned pale.

Then another voice echoed from the entrance.

Deep.

Controlled.

Filled with authority.

"No."

Everyone turned.

An older man in an immaculate charcoal suit stood at the end of the corridor.

Silver hair.

Calm eyes.

Military posture.

Behind him stood two university security officers who had clearly recognized him the moment he arrived.

Selena froze.

"Dad?"

She hadn't expected him.

He had flown back from Germany only hours earlier after missing the defense because of an international engineering summit.

He had come straight from the airport.

Dr. Richard Carter slowly walked toward his daughter.

His eyes stopped on her damaged hair.

His jaw tightened.

"What..."

"...did they do to you?"

Selena couldn't answer.

She simply lowered her eyes.

Richard gently touched one uneven strand.

His hand trembled.

Not from sadness.

From rage.

He turned toward Hunter.

Then Barbara.

His voice was terrifyingly calm.

"Tell me."

"Who laid a hand on my daughter?"

The hallway became so silent that even breathing sounded loud.

Barbara lifted her chin.

"I did."

"And I'd do it again."

Richard looked at her for several long seconds.

Then...

He smiled.

It wasn't kindness.

It was the smile of a man who had just made a life-changing decision.

"Good."

Barbara blinked.

"...Good?"

Richard reached into the inside pocket of his jacket.

Instead of a wallet...

He pulled out a thick envelope.

Then another.

Then a folder bearing an official legal seal.

He looked directly at Hunter.

"You should both stay."

"Because in the next five minutes..."

May you like

"...you're going to lose far more than you stole from my daughter's head."
