Chapter 8 - A New Breath

The chaos of the room melted away into a profound, sacred silence.

The nurse wiped down the small, squirming bundle and placed him gently onto Adriana’s bare chest. The baby instantly stopped crying, his tiny hands opening and closing against his mother's skin, a tuft of dark hair clinging to his forehead.

Adriana let out a ragged, weeping laugh, kissing the top of her son's head. "He’s here. He’s healthy."

She looked up at Damon. The terrifying kingpin of Boston was standing by the bedside, staring down at the infant with an expression of pure, unadulterated awe. A single tear, unnoticed by him, traced a path down his scarred cheek.

"Do you want to hold him?" Adriana whispered softly.

Damon hesitated, his hands twitching. "I... my hands have done things, Adriana. I shouldn't."

"Your hands just held me through the worst night of my life," she said, her voice filled with a sudden, profound warmth. "Hold your nephew, Damon."

Slowly, with a reverence usually reserved for holy relics, Damon slipped his large arms beneath the baby. He cradled the infant against his massive chest, his breath hitching as the baby’s tiny fingers brushed against his thumb.

"He looks like Eli," Damon whispered, his voice thick with emotion.

"His name is Eli," Adriana declared, her eyes shining with peace for the first time in six months. "Eli Calas Voss."

Damon looked up, his heart stopping at the inclusion of his name. In that moment, looking at the woman who had survived the shadows and the child who represented the future, he realized his life could no longer be lived in the dark. To protect them, he didn't need to be a monster anymore. He needed to build a world where monsters couldn't exist.
