Chapter 10 - Dawn over Boston Harbor

One year later.

The morning sun rose over the Boston Harbor, casting a brilliant, diamond-like glitter across the calm blue water. On the private deck of a beautifully restored historical home in Marblehead, far away from the noise and grime of the city, a little boy laughed.

Eli Jr., now a chubby, energetic toddler with bright amber eyes, was taking unstable, joyful steps across the grass, chasing a golden retriever puppy.

Adriana sat on the porch swing, a mug of warm tea between her hands. She looked radiant. The thin scar near her mouth had faded into a barely noticeable line, a small reminder of a past that no longer had power over her. She wore a simple sundress, her hair blowing gently in the ocean breeze.

Footsteps echoed on the wooden deck.

Damon walked out, dressed in a simple linen shirt and jeans. He looked younger. The tension that had held his shoulders hostage for fifteen years was gone, replaced by a serene, relaxed grace. He carried a plate of fresh fruit and sat down on the swing beside her.

Eli Jr. noticed him immediately. "Da!" the toddler squealed, abandoning the puppy and stumbling toward the porch as fast as his little legs could carry him.

Damon laughed, a sound that used to be a myth in Boston, and leaned down, scooping the boy up into his arms, tossing him gently into the air until the child shrieked with delight. He sat the boy on his lap, his hand resting casually on the back of the swing, his fingers brushing against Adriana’s shoulder.

Adriana leaned her head against his chest, listening to the steady, calm beat of his heart.

"Are you happy?" Damon asked softly, kissing the crown of her head, his eyes fixed on the horizon where the open sea met the sky.

Adriana looked down at the scratched steel watch on her wrist—the watch Damon had restored for her, a symbol of a promise kept. Then she looked at her son, laughing in the arms of the man who had torn down an empire just to keep them safe.

"I'm home," she whispered, turning her face up to kiss his cheek. "We're finally safe, Damon."

The shadows of St. Cordova had vanished, replaced by the brilliant, golden light of a new beginning.

THE END.
