Chapter 1 - The Sanctuary of Shadows

The world did not return in a rush of light; it crept back in the slow, rhythmic beep-beep-beep of a heart monitor and the distinct scent of polished mahogany and sterilized linen.
When Adriana finally forced her heavy eyelids open, the oppressive, golden glare of St. Cordova was gone. Instead, she was looking up at a coffered ceiling painted in muted cream tones. The mattress beneath her was impossibly soft, a far cry from the sagging, spring-bitten cot she had been renting in the North End.
She gasped, her hand flying instinctively to her abdomen.
"The baby is fine, Adriana."
The voice came from the dim corner of the room. Damon Calas sat in a leather armchair, his suit jacket draped over the back, the sleeves of his crisp white shirt rolled up to his forearms. A glass of scotch sat untouched on the side table. He looked exhausted, yet his eyes possessed the terrifying, hyper-focused clarity of a predator guarding its den.
"Where... where am I?" Adriana’s voice was a cracked whisper. She tried to sit up, but a sharp wave of dizziness anchored her to the pillows.
"My private residence in Beacon Hill," Damon said, rising slowly. He approached the bed with deliberate, unhurried steps, as if trying not to frighten a wounded animal. "A private obstetrician has already been here. You suffered from severe dehydration, malnutrition, and acute physical exhaustion. They put you on an IV. You’ve been asleep for fourteen hours."
Adriana looked down at her arm. A clear tube ran from a bag of saline into the back of her hand. Panic, cold and sharp, flared in her chest. She began tearing at the medical tape. "I can't be here, Damon. I told you, I can't be near your world. If people find out Eli's wife is—"
"Eli's wife was starving in the gutter of my city while I ate off gold plates," Damon interrupted, his voice dropping an octave. It wasn't loud, but the sheer gravity of it stopped her hands instantly. He reached out, gently but firmly taking her wrists, preventing her from pulling the needle out. "Do you have any idea what it did to me to see you look at me with fear? To see you hiding behind a fake name, working twelve-hour shifts on your feet while carrying his child?"
"I was protecting him," she cried, tears finally spilling over her lashes, burning against the thin scratch Celeste’s ring had left on her cheek. "The men who killed Eli... they wanted to erase everything he loved. If they knew I was carrying his legacy, they would have used me to get to you, or used you to get to me. Hiding was the only choice."

Damon’s expression softened, a rare fracture appearing in his stony facade. He let go of her wrists and instead reached into his pocket, pulling out the scratched steel watch. He placed it gently on the nightstand beside her.
"Your hiding is over," Damon said quietly. "The Marquettis wanted a war because they are drowning. But by touching you, Celeste didn't just sink her father's ships—she blew up the entire harbor. No one is coming for you, Adriana. Because by tomorrow morning, anyone who ever looked at the Voss name with malice will be too busy trying to survive what I'm about to do to them."
