Chapter 7 - The Breaking Point

The private wing of Boston General Hospital was locked down within three minutes. Damon’s men stood guard at every entrance, rifles concealed beneath their jackets, while the city's finest specialists rushed into the delivery room.
The stress of the encounter with Celeste, combined with months of previous starvation, had triggered early labor. Adriana was only eight and a half months along.
Inside the room, the lights were bright, the sounds chaotic. Adriana was crying, overwhelmed by pain and terror. "It's too early," she sobbed, her fingers twisting into the hospital sheets. "He's not ready, Damon. Eli... I can't lose him too."
Damon sat beside her. He had shed his jacket, his tie gone, his shirt stained with her sweat and tears. He did something he had never done in his adult life: he showed vulnerability. He took her hand, pressing it against his chest, right over his racing heart.
"You are not going to lose him," Damon said, his eyes burning with a fierce, absolute conviction. "I don't care what the universe wants. I am not letting anything happen to this child. Look at me, Adriana. Focus on me."
For hours, the battle raged. Outside the hospital, Silvio Barretti had attempted to mobilize a hit squad, sensing Damon’s distraction, but Leo and the Calas security team intercepted them three blocks away. A silent, brutal war was fought on the rainy streets of Boston while inside, a different kind of fight for survival took place.
Damon never left her side. Through every contraction, through every scream of agony, he was her anchor. He didn't look like a mob boss or a ruthless billionaire; he looked like a man fighting for the only family he had left in the world.
"Push, Adriana!" the doctor commanded. "One more time!"

With a final, desperate cry, Adriana shattered the remaining strength in her body.
And then, the room filled with the sharp, beautiful, indignant cry of a newborn baby.
