CHAPTER 6 – THE DNA LIE THAT DESTROYED A FAMILY

CHAPTER 6 – THE DNA LIE THAT DESTROYED A FAMILY

The investigators immediately obtained the original laboratory records.

The envelope Joyce had stolen had never reached Peter.

Instead, someone had requested a duplicate copy.

The lab technician confirmed only one person had claimed it.

Joyce Whitmore.

Detective Ramirez looked at Helen.

"I think your mother-in-law has been hiding something for years."

Peter arrived at the police station an hour later.

The detective placed two envelopes in front of him.

"The first one was the altered report your mother kept."

"The second is the original."

Peter's hands trembled as he opened them.

The fake report stated:

Probability of paternity: 0%.

The authentic report stated:

Probability of paternity: 99.9998%.

Peter stared at the papers.

"I don't understand."

Detective Ramirez slid over another document.

"A forensic examiner determined someone replaced the first page of the report."

Peter whispered,

"My mother..."

The detective nodded.

"We believe she intended for you to eventually discover the fake version."

"So you'd believe Kevin wasn't your son."

Helen gasped.

"Oh my God..."

Detective Ramirez continued.

"If your marriage collapsed..."

"...Joyce could blame you leaving on Helen's supposed betrayal instead of her own abuse."

Peter buried his face in his hands.

Every memory suddenly made sense.

His mother's constant remarks.

"Kevin doesn't resemble you."

"Children can surprise us."

"You should always be certain before trusting anyone."

She had been planting seeds of doubt for years.

Waiting.

Preparing.

Planning.

Helen looked physically ill.

"She wanted us to divorce."

"No," the detective corrected gently.

"She wanted to erase the only person who reminded her of Peter's childhood."

That afternoon, police officers arrested Joyce on charges related to evidence tampering, witness intimidation, and child psychological abuse.

As they escorted her toward the patrol car, reporters crowded outside.

"Mrs. Whitmore!"

"Did you really humiliate your grandson?"

"Did you falsify DNA evidence?"

Joyce remained silent until she noticed Peter standing across the street.

She smiled.

A cold.

Broken smile.

"I did everything for you."

Peter slowly shook his head.

"No."

"You did everything for yourself."

The officers closed the patrol car door.

For the first time in decades...

Joyce had no control over anyone.

Two weeks later, Peter attended his first supervised visit with Kevin.

The little boy sat across from him, coloring a picture of dinosaurs.

For several minutes, neither spoke.

Finally, Peter whispered,

"I'm sorry."

Kevin kept coloring.

"You didn't stop Grandma."

Peter's eyes filled with tears.

"No."

"I didn't."

The little boy looked up.

"Are you going to let people be mean to me again?"

Peter answered without hesitation.

"Never."

Kevin studied his father's face for a long moment.

Then he quietly slid one crayon across the table.

It wasn't forgiveness.

Not yet.

But it was the first tiny bridge between a father determined to change...

...and a little boy who had every reason not to believe him.

Neither of them knew that outside the visitation center, Helen had just received another anonymous envelope.

This one contained only a single photograph.

It showed Joyce twenty-five years earlier...

Standing beside a man no one in the Whitmore family had ever heard of.

On the back was a handwritten sentence:

"Find him before the trial... because he's about to tell the truth Joyce has been hiding for forty-five years.
