CHAPTER 5 – THE SECRET HIDDEN ON A BIRTH CERTIFICATE

CHAPTER 5 – THE SECRET HIDDEN ON A BIRTH CERTIFICATE
Helen barely slept that night.
Kevin finally drifted off in the guest bedroom at George and Irene's house, exhausted from crying himself to sleep. Every few minutes he whimpered, clutching the stuffed dinosaur Helen had bought him for his birthday.
She sat beside him until dawn.
Her phone lay on the nightstand, displaying the anonymous message over and over.
Check Peter's birth certificate.
The answer isn't what anyone thinks.
It made no sense.
What could Peter's birth certificate possibly have to do with Joyce's hatred of Kevin?
The next morning, Helen's phone rang.
It was Harold.
"I need to see you," he said. "Alone."
An hour later, they met in Harold's attorney's office.
The seventy-year-old businessman looked like he had aged a decade overnight.
He placed an old leather folder on the conference table.
"I never thought anyone would have to see this."
Inside were adoption records.
DNA reports.
Hospital documents.
Helen stared in disbelief.
"What is this?"
Harold took a deep breath.
"Peter isn't my biological son."
Helen's eyes widened.
"What?"
"I found out thirty-eight years ago."
He slid a faded DNA report toward her.
"The test proved I wasn't his father."
Helen struggled to process the information.
"But... everyone believes—"
"I chose to stay."
Harold looked out the window.
"I loved Peter too much to abandon him."
"So Joyce had an affair?"
Harold nodded slowly.
"She begged me to keep the truth hidden."
"And I did."
Helen frowned.
"What does this have to do with Kevin?"
Harold hesitated.
Then he whispered the words that changed everything.
"Joyce never forgave Peter for exposing her betrayal."
Helen stared at him.
"I don't understand."
"When Peter was born, everyone calculated the dates."
"They realized she had become pregnant before our wedding."
"My parents forced me to marry her anyway to avoid public scandal."
Harold's voice was heavy with regret.
"Every time Joyce looked at Peter... she remembered the biggest lie of her life."
"So she blamed... her own child?"
"Yes."
"And when Kevin was born..."
Harold closed his eyes.
"He looked exactly like Peter did at five years old."
Helen felt sick.
"She wasn't punishing Kevin."
"No."
Harold's voice cracked.
"She was punishing the little boy she could never bring herself to love."
Meanwhile, Peter sat alone in his empty apartment.
Every room reminded him of Kevin.
Toy dinosaurs beneath the couch.
Tiny shoes near the front door.
Finger paintings taped to the refrigerator.
The silence was unbearable.
His phone buzzed.
It was his older brother Daniel.
"Come to Mom's house."
"I don't think that's a good idea."
"It isn't a request."
When Peter arrived, he found almost the entire Whitmore family gathered inside.
No one was speaking to Joyce.
She sat rigidly in the living room, her makeup smeared after an entire night of crying.
Daniel threw a folder onto the coffee table.
"We know."
Joyce looked confused.
"Know what?"
"I spoke with Dad."
The room became deadly quiet.
"I know Peter isn't my biological brother."
Joyce's hands began shaking violently.
"You had no right—"
"No."
Daniel interrupted.
"You had no right to spend forty-two years destroying him because of your own choices."
Joyce burst into tears.
"You don't understand what I sacrificed!"
Rebecca stood.
"We understand perfectly."
"You sacrificed your children to protect your pride."
One by one...
Family members stood up.
One after another.
Not beside Joyce.
Away from her.
For the first time in her life...
She stood completely alone.
That evening, Helen filed for temporary emergency custody.
The judge reviewed the birthday video.
The hidden recordings.
The witness statements.
Within hours, an emergency order was signed.
Joyce was prohibited from any contact with Kevin.
Peter was granted only supervised visitation until the investigation concluded.
When Peter received the court order, he didn't argue.
He simply signed it.
Because for the first time...
He realized protecting his son mattered more than protecting his family's reputation.
But the investigation wasn't over.
As detectives continued reviewing the anonymous videos, they uncovered something far more disturbing than emotional abuse.
One clip showed Joyce secretly entering Peter and Helen's apartment late at night—using her own key.
The timestamp was from nearly three years earlier.
She walked directly into Kevin's bedroom.
Then she quietly removed something from beneath his pillow.
Detectives paused the video.
Zoomed in.
And every person in the room went silent.
It wasn't a toy.
It wasn't money.
