CHAPTER 3 – THE SECRET FILES NO ONE WAS SUPPOSED TO SEE

CHAPTER 3 – THE SECRET FILES NO ONE WAS SUPPOSED TO SEE

The apartment fell into stunned silence.

Joyce's confident smile vanished the moment the police officer spoke.

"Thirty videos?" Peter repeated, staring at his mother.

"That's impossible."

The investigator placed a thick evidence envelope on the dining table.

"It appears someone inside your extended family preserved recordings over several years. They were anonymously delivered to our office this morning."

Joyce's face turned ghostly white.

"Someone is framing me."

The officer remained expressionless.

"Then you'll have the opportunity to explain."

Kevin clung tightly to Helen's leg, still trembling.

Helen knelt beside him and gently covered his ears.

"You don't have to listen anymore, sweetheart."

George stepped forward.

"My grandson is done being your experiment."

The investigator opened the envelope.

Inside were printed photographs.

Still frames from hidden security cameras.

One showed Joyce forcing three-year-old Kevin to stand in the corner for nearly an hour because he had spilled juice.

Another showed her throwing away a handmade Mother's Day card after telling him, "Your handwriting embarrasses this family."

Another froze Helen's blood.

Kevin—only four years old—sat alone in Joyce's immaculate dining room.

A birthday cupcake rested on the table.

Joyce calmly picked it up, dropped it into the trash, and said,

"Crying children don't deserve dessert."

Helen covered her mouth.

"I never knew..."

"No," the investigator replied softly.

"Because these incidents happened whenever your son visited his grandmother without you."

Peter stared at the photographs as though they belonged to another family.

"Mom..."

Joyce snatched one of the pictures.

"He needed discipline!"

"That's not discipline," Irene shouted.

"That's emotional torture."

The police officer continued.

"There is more."

He inserted a flash drive into the television.

The first video began playing.

Joyce's voice filled the room.

"If you tell your mommy what Grandma says, she'll stop loving you because she'll know you're a bad boy."

Kevin, barely four years old, nodded fearfully.

"I won't tell."

"You promise?"

"I promise..."

Helen broke down.

Her knees gave out beneath her.

She finally understood why her cheerful little boy had slowly become anxious.

Why he constantly apologized.

Why he asked permission to eat.

Joyce had spent years convincing him that love depended on obedience.

Peter's breathing became uneven.

He remembered every time Kevin had begged not to visit Grandma's house.

Every time Helen had asked him to intervene.

Every single time he had answered...

"Mom means well."

He suddenly realized the horrifying truth.

He had delivered his own son into the hands of his abuser.

That evening, the investigators requested formal statements from everyone.

Before leaving, one detective stopped beside Helen.

"There is one more thing."

He handed her a sealed envelope addressed in shaky handwriting.

It simply read:

For Kevin's mother. Open after the police arrive.

"There was no return address," the detective explained.

"It was delivered with the videos."

Helen slowly opened it.

Inside was a handwritten letter.

The first line made her heart stop.

I'm the one who recorded everything.

I'm sorry it took me four years to find the courage.

No signature.

Only one sentence at the bottom.

She destroyed my childhood too. I couldn't let her destroy Kevin's.

Helen looked toward Joyce.

For the first time...

The older woman's expression wasn't angry.

May you like

It was terrified.

Because someone from her own past had finally spoken.
