CHAPTER 4 – THE HUSBAND WHO CHOSE TOO LATE

CHAPTER 4 – THE HUSBAND WHO CHOSE TOO LATE

The house emptied before sunset.

George and Irene took Kevin into the guest room so he wouldn't hear the arguing.

Only three people remained in the living room.

Helen.

Peter.

Joyce.

Joyce stood first.

"You are not taking my grandson away."

Helen laughed bitterly.

"You lost the right to call him your grandson the moment you wrapped humiliation with a golden ribbon."

Peter finally spoke.

"Mom..."

She looked at him hopefully.

"Tell her she's overreacting."

Instead, Peter asked quietly,

"Did you really say she'd stop loving him if he told the truth?"

Joyce hesitated.

"It was only to make him behave."

Peter closed his eyes.

His entire childhood flashed before him.

The report cards that were never good enough.

The birthdays where mistakes mattered more than candles.

The endless reminders that affection had to be earned.

He had survived by convincing himself that was normal.

Now he realized...

His mother had simply started over with Kevin.

"No," Peter whispered.

Joyce frowned.

"What did you say?"

"I said no."

It was the first time in forty-two years he had ever refused her.

"You will never be alone with my son again."

Joyce slapped him across the face.

The crack echoed through the apartment.

"You ungrateful boy!"

"I sacrificed everything for you!"

Peter touched his burning cheek.

"No."

"You sacrificed everyone else for yourself."

Joyce's mask shattered.

"You've always been weak!"

"I made you successful!"

"I made this family respected!"

Helen watched silently.

For years she had believed Joyce controlled only her.

Now she understood.

Peter had been controlled his entire life.

The difference was that he had allowed the cycle to continue.

He slowly turned toward Helen.

"I'm sorry."

She looked into his eyes.

"I believe you're sorry."

Hope flickered across his face.

Then she finished.

"But being sorry isn't the same as protecting us."

Peter's shoulders collapsed.

She removed her wedding ring.

The tiny band landed softly on the dining table.

"I begged you for five years."

"I asked you to believe me."

"I asked you to choose your son."

"You chose your mother every single time."

Peter began crying.

Real tears.

Not for his marriage.

For the realization that every warning Helen had ever given him had been true.

"I'm leaving," Helen said calmly.

"I'm taking Kevin."

"You can fight me in court if you want."

"But understand this..."

"If my son ever cries because of your mother's cruelty again..."

"I won't just leave."

"I'll make sure every judge in this state watches today's birthday video."

Peter didn't answer.

He couldn't.

Because deep inside...

He knew she would win.

As Helen packed Kevin's small dinosaur backpack, her phone vibrated.

The anonymous sender had sent one final message.

You still don't know why Joyce hated Kevin.

Check Peter's birth certificate.

The answer isn't what anyone thinks.

Helen stared at the screen.

Behind her, Joyce suddenly screamed,

"No!"

May you like

It wasn't the scream of an angry woman.

It was the scream of someone whose biggest secret had just begun to surface.
