CHAPTER 6: Patricia's Final Gamble

CHAPTER 6: Patricia's Final Gamble
Most people believed the nightmare had ended with Vanessa's conviction.
They were wrong.
It had only reached intermission.
A week after the verdict, Detective Mitchell appeared at my front door.
Her expression was unusually serious.
“We need to talk.”
She placed a folder on my dining table.
“These documents weren't introduced during trial because we found them afterward.”
Inside were bank records.
Private wire transfers.
Cash withdrawals.
Phone logs.
One payment immediately stood out.
$50,000 transferred to a private investigator two weeks before Christmas.
Another.
$25,000 withdrawn in cash on December 22.
“What is this?” Daniel asked.
The detective took a slow breath.
“We believe Patricia wasn't only trying to force you out of the family.”
“She was preparing for something much worse.”
My stomach tightened.
The detective slid forward another document.
It was an insurance policy.
Daniel's life insurance policy.
Value:
Five million dollars.
Beneficiary:
Patricia Collins.
Daniel frowned.
“That isn't possible.”
“I changed my beneficiary to Emily after we married.”
“You did,” Detective Mitchell replied.
“This is the old policy.”
She placed another page beside it.
Someone had recently requested copies of the canceled policy.
The request came from Patricia's attorney.
Three days before Christmas.
The room fell silent.
“There is more,” Detective Mitchell continued.
“The private investigator admitted Patricia asked him to dig into Emily's medical history.”
I looked up.
“Why?”
“He said Patricia wanted to know whether severe burn injuries could leave permanent disabilities.”
Daniel's face drained of color.
“She wasn't trying to scare Emily.”
“She wanted to destroy her.”
Before anyone could process the revelation, Daniel's phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
No one spoke for several seconds.
Then a familiar voice whispered,
“You've already destroyed one daughter.”
“Don't destroy your mother too.”
Click.
The call ended.
Daniel stared at the screen.
“That was Patricia.”
Detective Mitchell nodded slowly.
“She violated her no-contact order.”
“That phone call just became evidence.”
Two months later, Patricia stood before the same judge who had sentenced Vanessa.
This time...
She wasn't sitting behind her daughter.
She was the defendant.
The prosecution laid out years of harassment, conspiracy, witness intimidation, stalking, and evidence showing deliberate coordination leading up to the assault.
When the judge asked if she wished to make a statement, Patricia stood proudly.
“I only wanted to protect my family.”
The judge looked at her over his glasses.
“No, Mrs. Collins.”
“You wanted to control your family.”
“And when control failed... you chose cruelty.”
The gavel came down.
Patricia was convicted.
As deputies escorted her from the courtroom, she looked directly at me.
For the first time in three years...
There was no hatred in her eyes.
Only the crushing realization that she had destroyed the very family she claimed she was protecting.
Daniel slipped his hand into mine.
“We're free.”
I looked through the courthouse windows at the bright spring sunlight.
For months, I had dreamed about revenge.
But standing there, watching the Collins empire fall under the weight of its own lies...
May you like
I realized something unexpected.
Justice had always been enough.
