CHAPTER 2: The Call That Destroyed Their Perfect Christmas

CHAPTER 2: The Call That Destroyed Their Perfect Christmas
“911. What is your emergency?”
My voice came out broken, barely louder than a whisper.
“My... my sister-in-law pushed me into boiling oil. I have severe burns. I'm at 147 Willow Crest Drive. Please send an ambulance... and the police.”
Silence swallowed the dining room.
Then Patricia laughed.
“Oh, for heaven’s sake,” she scoffed, lifting her wineglass. “She's putting on a little performance.”
Vanessa crossed her arms, but I noticed something for the first time.
She had gone pale.
Because she knew.
She knew about the kitchen camera.
She knew exactly what it had captured.
The dispatcher remained calm.
“Ma'am, are you safe right now?”
I looked around the room.
Seven members of Daniel's family stared at me.
Not one of them had taken a single step toward me.
“No,” I answered honestly. “They're all still here.”
The dispatcher's tone changed immediately.
“Officers and paramedics are already on the way. Stay on the line. Do not hang up.”
Frank suddenly stood.
“Give me that phone.”
He reached toward me.
I dragged myself backward across the floor despite the agony exploding through my legs.
“Don't touch me!”
The scream echoed through the house.
For the first time in two years...
Someone looked frightened.
Not me.
Them.
Vanessa rushed forward, forcing tears into her eyes.
“Oh my God, Emily, this is getting ridiculous! It was an accident!”
I stared at her.
“Really?”
She froze.
I held up my phone.
“The audio recording says otherwise.”
The color drained from her face.
Patricia immediately stepped between us.
“What recording?”
Without answering, I pressed PLAY.
The room filled with voices.
Vanessa laughing earlier that evening.
"Maybe if she ruins dinner again, Daniel will finally realize she's useless."
Frank's voice followed.
"She'll never belong here."
Patricia chuckled.
"She's temporary. We simply have to outlast her."
Their own words echoed through the silent dining room.
Nobody spoke.
Then...
Vanessa's whisper played through the speaker.
"That's the price for stealing my brother from this family. Next time, it'll be your face."
Every heartbeat in the room seemed to stop.
Patricia lunged toward my phone.
I pulled it against my chest.
“You're insane!” Patricia shouted.
“No,” I said quietly.
“I finally stopped pretending.”
At that exact moment...
The front door opened.
“Emily?”
Daniel.
He walked inside carrying two expensive bottles of champagne, smiling from the cold.
His smile disappeared instantly.
The smell hit him first.
Burned meat.
Burned skin.
Then he saw me.
His wife.
Curled on the floor.
My dress soaked with blood.
My legs blistered and peeling.
His face turned white.
“What happened?”
Nobody answered.
Vanessa stepped forward first.
“It was an accident—”
“She pushed me.”
My words cut straight through hers.
Daniel looked from me...
...to Vanessa...
...to Patricia.
No one could meet his eyes.
Then he noticed the trail of blood stretching from the kitchen.
Without another word, he ran to me and dropped to his knees.
“Oh my God…”
His hands trembled as he carefully lifted the edge of my burned dress.
The skin underneath was already peeling away.
He looked physically sick.
“Who called an ambulance?”
“I did.”
He squeezed my hand.
“You're going to be okay.”
Before I could answer...
Sirens filled the night.
Blue and red lights flashed across the dining room windows like lightning.
Nobody reached for another glass of wine.
Three police officers and two paramedics stormed inside.
One medic rushed straight toward me.
The other looked around the room.
“Who is Vanessa Collins?”
No one moved.
The officer repeated louder.
“Vanessa Collins?”
Vanessa slowly raised one shaking hand.
“I... I'm Vanessa.”
The officer looked directly at her.
“We're investigating an alleged assault causing serious bodily injury.”
Patricia immediately exploded.
“This is outrageous! She's lying!”
The officer didn't even glance at her.
“Ma'am, we also received information that the incident may have been captured on security video.”
Every face at the table changed.
Especially Patricia's.
She had forgotten about her own camera.
The same camera she insisted on installing because she trusted no one.
Now...
It was about to testify against her own daughter.
One officer disappeared into the kitchen.
Thirty seconds later, his voice echoed back through the hallway.
“Found the DVR.”
Vanessa suddenly bolted.
She sprinted toward the kitchen.
“No!”
Everyone watched in horror as she grabbed the recorder from the cabinet and hurled it toward the fireplace.
But she never made it.
An officer intercepted her halfway.
The DVR slipped from her hands and crashed harmlessly onto the carpet.
The officer pinned her wrists behind her back.
“You're making this much worse.”
Vanessa began screaming.
“You don't understand!”
“She ruined our family!”
“She stole my brother!”
“She deserved it!”
The entire room fell silent.
No one had forced that confession.
She had just handed it to the police herself.
One of the officers slowly turned on his body camera.
“Ma'am... would you like to repeat that statement?”
Vanessa realized what she'd said.
It was already too late.
As the paramedics carefully lifted me onto the stretcher, I caught Patricia staring at me.
Not with anger anymore.
With fear.
Real fear.
Because for the first time in her life...
Money...
Family reputation...
And Christmas traditions...
May you like
Could not silence the truth.
And this was only the beginning.
