CHAPTER 5: The Trial They Never Expected

CHAPTER 5: The Trial They Never Expected
Three months later, the courthouse steps were packed with reporters.
Every local news station wanted a glimpse of the wealthy family whose perfect reputation had collapsed in a single Christmas dinner.
The Collins family had spent decades buying influence.
But they couldn't buy back the security footage.
Or Vanessa's confession.
Or Patricia's own handwritten notes.
I walked into the courtroom with faint scars still visible beneath the hem of my dress.
The burns had healed.
The nightmares hadn't.
Daniel squeezed my hand before we entered.
“You don't have to look at them.”
“I do,” I replied.
“For two years, I lowered my eyes every time they insulted me.”
“Not anymore.”
Across the room, Patricia sat in an expensive navy suit.
She looked immaculate.
If someone didn't know better, they'd mistake her for the victim.
Frank stared straight ahead, refusing to acknowledge me.
Vanessa looked different.
Gone was the confident woman with perfect makeup and arrogant smirks.
Her hair was pulled back carelessly.
Dark circles framed her eyes.
She hadn't smiled once since her arrest.
The prosecutor began with one sentence.
“This case is not about an accident.”
“It is about calculated cruelty.”
The courtroom fell silent.
The security footage played on the large screen.
No dramatic music.
No commentary.
Only cold, undeniable facts.
Vanessa looking over both shoulders.
Vanessa stepping forward.
Vanessa smiling.
Vanessa shoving me.
The room remained silent until the audio recording followed.
"That's the price for stealing my brother from this family."
"Next time, it'll be your face."
Several jurors visibly flinched.
Patricia slowly closed her eyes.
For the first time...
She understood there was no escaping this.
Then came the testimony no one expected.
The Collins family's former housekeeper, Maria, walked into the courtroom.
Patricia's attorney immediately objected.
The judge overruled him.
Maria raised her hand and took the oath.
“How long did you work for the Collins family?” the prosecutor asked.
“Eleven years.”
“Did you ever witness the defendant, Patricia Collins, mistreat family members?”
Maria's voice trembled.
“Yes.”
She described years of manipulation.
Patricia deciding who could eat at the main table.
Who received gifts.
Who was ignored for weeks as punishment.
Then she revealed something even darker.
“She always said... if someone couldn't be controlled with love... they'd be controlled with fear.”
The courtroom was silent.
Maria turned toward me.
“When Mrs. Emily married into the family... Patricia said she would either break her... or make her disappear.”
Gasps echoed across the courtroom.
Patricia shot to her feet.
“She's lying!”
The judge slammed the gavel.
“One more interruption, Mrs. Collins, and I will hold you in contempt.”
Patricia slowly sat down.
But the damage was done.
Later that afternoon, the defense called Vanessa to testify.
It was a disaster.
She insisted the shove had been accidental.
Then the prosecutor asked a single question.
“If it was an accident...”
“Why did you tell the victim, 'Next time, it'll be your face'?”
Vanessa froze.
“I... I didn't mean—”
The prosecutor interrupted.
“You also told police, and I quote, 'She deserved it.'”
Another pause.
“And moments later you attempted to destroy the DVR containing the video.”
The silence stretched painfully.
Finally, Vanessa whispered,
“I was angry.”
The prosecutor nodded.
“No further questions.”
The jury had heard enough.
Two days later, the verdict was read.
Vanessa was found guilty of aggravated assault, assault with a deadly instrument, attempted destruction of evidence, and making incriminating statements during an active investigation.
She broke down sobbing as deputies placed handcuffs on her wrists.
She looked at Daniel.
“Please... tell them I didn't mean for it to go this far.”
May you like
Daniel didn't answer.
He simply turned away.
