CHAPTER 4: The Secret They Buried

CHAPTER 4: The Secret They Buried
Christmas morning arrived beneath gray skies.
Outside my hospital window, snow drifted quietly across the parking lot.
Inside...
My husband's family was falling apart.
Detective Mitchell returned carrying a thick evidence folder.
“Emily,” she said carefully.
“We found a locked filing cabinet in Patricia's office.”
She spread documents across my hospital tray.
“At first we thought they were financial records.”
“They weren't.”
I picked up the first page.
It was my name.
My full legal name.
Dated six months before I even met Daniel.
“How is that possible?”
The detective nodded.
“That was our question too.”
She handed me another document.
A background investigation.
My college transcripts.
Employment records.
Medical history.
Even my childhood address.
Daniel stared at the papers in disbelief.
“My mother hired a private investigator?”
The detective answered quietly.
“Not just to investigate Emily.”
“To monitor her.”
I felt my stomach tighten.
“For how long?”
“Almost three years.”
“But... Daniel and I have only been married for two.”
“Exactly.”
Silence filled the room.
Then Daniel looked at me.
“We met almost three years ago.”
I suddenly remembered.
The charity gala.
The first time Daniel had introduced himself.
The strange older woman who kept watching us from across the ballroom.
Patricia.
She hadn't been surprised when Daniel brought me home.
She already knew everything about me.
The detective opened another folder.
“This is where the case becomes much more serious.”
Inside were dozens of printed emails.
Anonymous messages.
Private investigator reports.
Notes written in Patricia's handwriting.
One sentence had been circled several times.
"She has no surviving family with financial influence. Minimal legal risk."
My blood ran cold.
“What does that mean?”
The detective looked at me carefully.
“We believe Patricia considered you an ideal target.”
Daniel slammed his fist against the bedside table.
“My own mother...”
“She believed,” the detective continued, “that if enough pressure was applied, you would eventually leave the marriage voluntarily.”
Another page.
Another handwritten note.
"Increase emotional isolation. Daniel must never suspect coordination."
I looked at Daniel.
His face had lost all color.
“They planned this for years.”
He whispered the words as though saying them aloud made them real.
Before anyone could speak again, Detective Mitchell received another call.
She listened in silence.
Then slowly lowered the phone.
“Vanessa has officially been charged.”
I released a long breath.
But the detective wasn't finished.
“She isn't the only one.”
Daniel frowned.
“What do you mean?”
“The District Attorney believes there's sufficient evidence to pursue conspiracy charges against anyone who knowingly participated.”
The room became perfectly still.
“Patricia... Frank... and two other family members are now under criminal investigation.”
At that exact moment, the television mounted on the hospital wall switched to a breaking news bulletin.
A reporter stood outside Patricia's mansion.
Police vehicles filled the driveway.
Neighbors watched from across the street.
The headline flashed across the screen:
PROMINENT LOCAL FAMILY INVESTIGATED AFTER CHRISTMAS DINNER ASSAULT.
Daniel stared at the television in stunned silence.
Then his phone vibrated.
It was a message from Patricia.
Only six words.
"If you testify, you're dead to us."
Daniel looked at the text.
Then at me.
Without saying a single word...
He pressed FORWARD.
And sent the message directly to Detective Mitchell.
The detective smiled for the first time.
May you like
"Thank you," she said.
"That may have just turned this investigation into something much bigger."
