CHAPTER 3: The Video No One Could Explain Away

CHAPTER 3: The Video No One Could Explain Away
The ambulance doors slammed shut, and the sirens carried me away from the only home I had known for two years.
Behind me, Christmas lights still twinkled along Patricia's roofline.
From the outside, it looked like the picture-perfect holiday gathering.
Inside, it had become a crime scene.
The emergency room erupted into controlled chaos.
Doctors cut away what remained of my dress.
A nurse gripped my hand.
“This is going to hurt.”
She wasn't lying.
The moment cool saline touched the burns, pain exploded through my body so violently that I nearly blacked out.
Someone injected morphine into my IV.
The ceiling blurred.
Voices became distant.
“Second-degree burns... possible third-degree in several areas... prepare the burn unit...”
I drifted in and out of consciousness.
The next time I opened my eyes, Daniel was sitting beside my bed.
His shirt was stained with my blood.
His hands were shaking.
“I didn't know,” he whispered.
“You have to believe me.”
I studied his face.
For the first time since we had married...
I saw genuine horror.
“You left because your mother insisted on champagne,” I said quietly.
“There were already six bottles in the house.”
His head dropped.
“I know.”
“I realized that on the drive back.”
“You were gone exactly twenty-eight minutes,” I continued.
“Long enough for them to make sure nobody would stop Vanessa.”
Daniel looked as though someone had punched him.
“You think they planned this?”
“I don't think.”
“I know.”
Before he could answer, a detective entered the room.
“My name is Detective Laura Mitchell.”
She placed a sealed evidence bag on the bedside table.
Inside was my phone.
“We've recovered the security footage.”
Daniel looked up hopefully.
“So it proves what happened?”
The detective didn't answer immediately.
Instead, she removed a tablet from her briefcase.
“You both need to see this.”
She pressed play.
The kitchen appeared on the screen.
There I was, carefully lifting the roasting pan from the oven.
Vanessa walked behind me.
She looked around.
Left.
Right.
Checking whether anyone else was nearby.
Then...
She smiled.
Not a nervous smile.
Not an accidental expression.
A deliberate one.
She lowered her shoulder.
Stepped forward.
And drove all her weight into my back.
The pan flew from my hands.
Boiling oil exploded over my legs.
I collapsed instantly.
Daniel covered his mouth.
“Oh God...”
The detective paused the video.
“Watch closely.”
She zoomed in.
Vanessa didn't rush to help.
She didn't call for assistance.
She leaned down beside me.
The camera had no audio.
But it captured every movement of her lips.
The detective slid another file across the table.
“We synchronized the security footage with the audio recording from your phone.”
She pressed another button.
The room filled with Vanessa's voice.
"That's the price for stealing my brother from this family."
The words matched perfectly with the movement of her lips.
"Next time, it'll be your face."
Daniel closed his eyes.
Tears rolled silently down his cheeks.
“There is no accident,” the detective said.
“This appears to be a deliberate assault.”
An hour later, another officer entered.
His expression was grim.
“We also searched the kitchen.”
He placed several photographs on the bed.
One showed cooking oil spread unnaturally across the floor near the oven.
Another showed a dish towel tucked beneath the roasting pan's handle.
“What does this mean?” I asked.
“Forensic technicians believe the towel was intentionally placed there.”
Daniel frowned.
“So the pan was unstable before Emily even picked it up?”
The officer nodded.
“It appears someone made sure it would flip as easily as possible.”
A chill swept through the room.
Vanessa hadn't acted on impulse.
She had prepared the trap.
The detective's phone rang.
She answered, listened for several seconds, then looked directly at us.
“That changes everything.”
“What happened?” Daniel asked.
“The officers obtained search warrants for Patricia's home office.”
May you like
She hesitated.
“They've found something... unexpected.”
