CHAPTER 5 – REBECCA DIDN'T DIE BY CHANCE

CHAPTER 5 – REBECCA DIDN'T DIE BY CHANCE
Daniel didn't sleep.
He couldn't.
The recording played over and over in his mind.
"Then he'll join Rebecca."
Those five words shattered everything he thought he knew.
For nearly a year, he had blamed fate.
Complications during childbirth.
An unpredictable medical tragedy.
Now, for the first time, another possibility emerged.
What if Rebecca hadn't simply died?
What if someone had made sure she never came home?
Before sunrise, Daniel contacted the only person he trusted completely—former FBI homicide investigator Michael Grant, now the head of Whitmore Corporate Security.
Michael listened to the recording twice without interrupting.
When it ended, he leaned back in silence.
"This isn't just extortion," he finally said.
"This sounds like conspiracy."
Daniel slid Rebecca's medical file across the desk.
"I want everything reexamined."
"Every doctor."
"Every nurse."
"Every medication."
"Even the ambulance records."
Michael nodded once.
"If someone touched your wife's treatment, we'll find it."
By noon, investigators had reconstructed Rebecca's final twenty-four hours.
Most of the records matched perfectly.
Except for one.
At 2:16 a.m., moments before the emergency C-section, an additional injection had been logged into Rebecca's chart.
The medication wasn't unusual.
The signature was.
The nurse whose electronic ID appeared on the record had been off duty that entire night.
Someone had used her credentials.
Michael stared at the screen.
"Someone entered the operating system."
"And they wanted us to believe the injection was legitimate."
Daniel's hands trembled.
"Can we identify who?"
"We're requesting the hospital's archived security footage."
Hours later, an old backup server produced grainy surveillance video from outside the maternity operating suite.
Doctors rushed through the corridor.
Nurses prepared emergency equipment.
Then, at 2:11 a.m., a woman wearing blue surgical scrubs stepped into frame.
Her face was partially covered by a mask.
But as she adjusted her cap...
A distinctive diamond butterfly necklace slipped into view.
Daniel's heart stopped.
Claire.
The same necklace she still wore almost every day.
Michael froze the image.
"She wasn't authorized to be there."
Daniel whispered, "Rebecca told me Claire wanted to visit that night..."
"But the hospital said no visitors were allowed."
Someone had lied.
The footage continued.
Claire disappeared into a medication room for exactly ninety-three seconds.
She exited carrying nothing visible.
Three minutes later, Rebecca suffered catastrophic complications.
The timing was impossible to ignore.
Michael immediately contacted state investigators.
Within an hour, detectives obtained a warrant to search Claire's apartment.
What they found was worse than anyone expected.
Hidden behind a false panel inside her walk-in closet were dozens of documents.
Fake identities.
Forged birth certificates.
Insurance paperwork.
Photographs of elderly millionaires.
Handwritten notes listing their illnesses, family members, and estimated net worth.
Claire hadn't targeted Daniel by accident.
She hunted wealthy widowers.
And Daniel was simply her biggest prize.
That evening, Claire returned to the penthouse carrying expensive toys for the triplets.
She found Daniel sitting quietly in the living room.
"You seem distracted," she said gently.
He smiled.
"Just thinking."
"About Rebecca?"
"Always."
Claire lowered her eyes, pretending to share his grief.
"You know..."
"She'd want you to be happy."
Daniel looked directly at her.
"I've been wondering."
"Were you at Memorial Hospital the night she died?"
Claire's smile disappeared.
Only for a fraction of a second.
Then she laughed.
"Of course not."
"I was out of state."
Daniel nodded slowly.
"Interesting."
"Because someone who looked exactly like you was seen entering the maternity floor."
Claire's face lost all color.
For the first time since Rebecca's funeral...
She had no answer.
Later that night, Claire locked herself inside the guest bedroom and made a frantic phone call.
"We have a problem."
The man's voice answered immediately.
"What happened?"
"He knows about the hospital."
Silence.
Then one cold reply.
"Leave tonight."
"And the children?"
"Forget them."
"We're saving ourselves."
Claire looked toward the nursery.
Months of pretending.
Months of manipulation.
Gone.
May you like
She packed a suitcase in under ten minutes.
She never noticed the police vehicles quietly surrounding the building below.
