CHAPTER 3 – THE MAN UNDER THE TABLE

CHAPTER 3 – THE MAN UNDER THE TABLE

The surveillance cameras were installed before dawn.

By breakfast, every hallway, staircase, nursery entrance, and living room inside Daniel Whitmore's oceanfront penthouse was quietly recording.

Claire never noticed.

She spent the morning humming while feeding the babies, stopping every few minutes to take carefully staged photographs.

One picture showed her cradling Noah beside the panoramic windows.

Another captured Evan sleeping against her shoulder.

Within minutes, the photos appeared on her private social media account.

"My little family. Blessed beyond words."

Daniel stared at the screen.

There wasn't a single photo of him.

The comments disturbed him even more.

"You finally found your billionaire!"

"Those babies are so lucky to have you as their mom."

Claire replied with nothing but a heart emoji.

She wasn't correcting anyone.

She was encouraging them.

That afternoon Daniel pretended he was leaving for a three-day business conference in New York.

Claire kissed him goodbye at the elevator.

"Don't worry about anything," she smiled. "We'll miss you."

Daniel smiled back.

"I know you will."

The private jet took off exactly as planned.

An hour later, however, another Whitmore helicopter quietly landed on the roof of a nearby office tower.

Daniel returned through a private service entrance that only security executives knew existed.

No lights.

No staff.

No announcements.

Only Daniel...

...and the security control room.

The first twelve hours showed nothing unusual.

Claire cared for the boys.

She answered phone calls.

She watched television.

Daniel almost felt guilty.

Maybe he really had become paranoid.

Then, at 11:47 p.m...

The elevator doors opened.

A tall man wearing a black baseball cap stepped inside.

Security had never approved any visitor.

Yet Claire welcomed him with a hug.

Not the hug of old friends.

The hug of lovers.

Daniel felt his blood freeze.

The stranger kissed her.

She laughed.

"I told you he'd believe the business trip."

The man grinned.

"When do we finish this?"

Claire glanced toward the nursery.

"Soon."

Daniel's security chief looked at him.

"Should we intervene?"

Daniel raised a hand.

"Not yet."

The cameras kept recording.

The couple entered Daniel's office.

Claire unlocked the wall safe.

Inside were Rebecca's wedding ring, important documents, and several encrypted hard drives.

The stranger photographed every page.

Estate records.

Trust agreements.

Life insurance policies.

Then Claire pulled out a folder Daniel had never seen before.

The stranger laughed.

"So once you're married..."

She interrupted.

"I don't need the marriage."

"I only need legal guardianship."

Daniel stopped breathing.

Minutes later Claire walked upstairs.

The stranger remained downstairs.

Instead of leaving...

...he crawled beneath the enormous marble dining table overlooking the ocean.

Daniel frowned.

"What is he doing?"

The answer came seconds later.

Claire returned carrying baby Noah.

She gently placed him inside a portable bassinet only a few feet away.

The stranger reached underneath the table and quietly handed Claire a tiny glass vial.

She slipped it into her pocket.

Daniel's fists clenched.

"What was that?"

Security zoomed in.

The image wasn't clear enough.

But one thing was obvious.

They had planned this.

Daniel raced home.

Not through the main entrance.

He entered through the underground garage.

By the time he reached the penthouse...

Claire had already carried Noah upstairs.

The stranger was gone.

She looked surprised.

"Daniel?"

"I thought your flight..."

"Was canceled."

He walked past her.

Straight into the nursery.

All three babies slept peacefully.

But Noah's tiny bottle sat on the changing table.

Daniel picked it up.

There was a faint white residue floating near the bottom.

His heart pounded.

Without saying a word, he placed the bottle inside a sealed evidence bag from the home medical kit.

Claire forced a smile.

"You're acting strange."

Daniel looked directly into her eyes.

"No."

"I'm finally paying attention."

Claire's smile faded.

For the first time...

She looked afraid.

The next morning Daniel drove to one of Florida's most respected forensic laboratories.

He handed over the bottle.

"I need every chemical identified."

"How long?"

The technician answered calmly.

"Twenty-four hours."

Daniel nodded.

May you like

He had no idea...

That the results would uncover a conspiracy far darker than simple murder.
