CHAPTER 4 – THE TEST THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

CHAPTER 4 – THE TEST THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING
Twenty-three hours later, Daniel's phone rang.
The laboratory director spoke only one sentence.
"Mr. Whitmore... you need to come here immediately."
His stomach dropped.
The director met him personally.
He closed the office door before sliding a laboratory report across the desk.
"The bottle contains a sedative."
Daniel expected that.
Then came the second page.
"It also contains trace amounts of a hormone inhibitor."
Daniel frowned.
"What does that mean?"
The director hesitated.
"In adults... almost nothing."
"In newborn infants..."
He paused.
"It can permanently interfere with healthy development if given repeatedly."
Daniel stared at him.
"Someone has been poisoning my son?"
"We can't prove intent."
"But this substance has absolutely no medical purpose in infant formula."
Daniel felt the room spinning.
He rushed straight to the pediatric hospital.
The boys underwent emergency blood testing.
Doctors carefully examined each child.
Hours later, the chief pediatrician entered the consultation room.
"There is good news."
Daniel stood immediately.
"The babies are healthy."
Relief flooded through him.
"But..."
The doctor continued.
"Noah shows tiny traces of the same compound."
Daniel nearly collapsed into his chair.
"It appears he received only a very small amount."
"Because treatment began quickly..."
"We expect a full recovery."
Daniel covered his face with both hands.
He had almost lost another member of his family.
Meanwhile Claire had no idea the tests had been completed.
She spent the afternoon shopping on Worth Avenue, smiling as she tried on diamond necklaces.
Her phone vibrated.
It was the mysterious man.
"You gave him too little."
Claire lowered her voice.
"I couldn't risk it."
"He came home early."
The man sounded irritated.
"Then we'll need another opportunity."
"There won't be one."
"What?"
Claire stopped walking.
"The police will start asking questions if anything happens now."
The man laughed coldly.
"You've already gone too far to quit."
Someone standing nearby heard every word.
An elderly woman slowly turned around.
She recognized Claire immediately.
Not from television.
Not from the newspapers.
From somewhere much darker.
That evening the woman walked into a police station carrying an old newspaper clipping.
Twenty years earlier.
A wealthy widower in Georgia.
A dead child.
A missing nanny.
No conviction.
No suspect.
Only one blurry photograph.
She placed the clipping beside Claire's recent magazine interview.
The detective's face changed instantly.
"They're the same woman."
Within an hour, investigators reopened the forgotten case.
Back at the penthouse, Daniel said nothing.
He acted as though everything was normal.
Claire kissed the babies goodnight.
She smiled at Daniel.
"You look tired."
"I am."
"You should sleep."
"I will."
She walked upstairs.
Ten minutes later, Daniel quietly entered the dining room.
He knelt...
...and crawled beneath the enormous marble table where the stranger had hidden the night before.
Using a flashlight, he searched every inch.
At first he found nothing.
Then his fingers touched something taped beneath the table.
A tiny black device.
Not a microphone.
Not a tracker.
A miniature digital recorder.
Daniel pressed PLAY.
A man's voice filled the silent room.
"Once she becomes guardian... the Whitmore fortune belongs to us."
Then Claire answered.
"And if Daniel starts asking questions?"
The man laughed.
"Then he'll join Rebecca."
Daniel's entire body went numb.
Rebecca's death...
Had it really been an accident?
May you like
Or had someone been planning this nightmare long before she ever entered the delivery room?
The answer was finally within reach.
