CHAPTER 2 – THE FIRST CRACKS

CHAPTER 2 – THE FIRST CRACKS

At first, Daniel convinced himself he was imagining things.

Grief could twist reality.

Lack of sleep could make ordinary moments feel suspicious.

But once he started paying attention, the pattern became impossible to ignore.

One afternoon, little Noah began crying upstairs.

Daniel rose from his office chair instinctively, only to hear Claire call from the nursery.

"I've got him."

Her voice was sweet.

Almost too sweet.

He paused outside the half-open door.

Instead of lifting the baby, Claire stood in front of the mirror, adjusting a diamond bracelet around her wrist while Noah's cries grew louder by the second.

Only after nearly three minutes did she finally sigh dramatically, pick him up, and glance toward the hallway—as if making sure no one had seen.

Daniel quietly stepped away before she noticed him.

That night he couldn't sleep.

Rebecca would have rushed to their sons before the first cry had even finished.

Claire waited until she thought someone might be watching.

The following week brought another surprise.

Daniel's financial advisor, Martin Hayes, arrived for their quarterly meeting carrying a thick folder.

"Did you authorize these purchases?"

Daniel frowned.

"What purchases?"

Martin slid several statements across the desk.

Luxury boutiques.

Private spas.

A custom Italian sports car deposit.

Jewelry exceeding eighty thousand dollars.

Every charge had been made using a secondary family account Daniel rarely checked.

The authorized user?

Claire Bennett.

Daniel stared silently.

"I only gave her emergency access," he muttered.

Martin adjusted his glasses.

"She described herself as your fiancée."

Daniel felt his stomach tighten.

Fiancée?

They had never even discussed marriage.

That evening Claire greeted him with champagne.

"I have wonderful news!" she beamed.

"What news?"

"I've already started planning our future."

She laid glossy brochures across the marble kitchen island.

Wedding venues.

Private schools.

A beachfront mansion twice the size of the penthouse.

She smiled as though everything had already been decided.

Daniel didn't touch a single brochure.

"When exactly did we become engaged?"

For a split second...

Her smile froze.

Only for a heartbeat.

Then it returned.

"Oh, Daniel."

She laughed softly.

"I assumed it was obvious."

"You need someone."

"The boys need a mother."

"And Rebecca..."

She lowered her eyes dramatically.

"Rebecca would want you to move on."

The sentence landed like a slap.

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"No one speaks for Rebecca."

Claire's expression darkened before softening once again.

"I'm only trying to help."

The next morning Daniel visited Rebecca's grave alone.

Fresh lilies rested against the white marble.

Someone else had been there recently.

He knelt quietly.

"I don't know what's happening," he whispered.

"I wish you were here."

A gentle breeze carried the scent of the ocean.

For the first time in months...

He didn't feel Rebecca telling him to let go.

He felt as though she was warning him.

Later that afternoon the boys underwent their routine pediatric examination.

Everything looked perfect.

Healthy weight.

Strong lungs.

Excellent reflexes.

As Daniel thanked the pediatrician, an elderly nurse stopped him in the hallway.

"Mr. Whitmore?"

He turned.

She hesitated before speaking.

"I hope you don't mind an old woman asking..."

"When you're away..."

"Who watches the babies?"

"Claire Bennett."

The nurse's smile disappeared.

"I've seen her here before."

Daniel frowned.

"When?"

"Twice."

"She asked unusual questions."

"What kind?"

The nurse looked around carefully.

"Questions about life insurance."

Daniel felt cold.

"She asked how quickly large estates transfer when both parents are deceased."

Silence.

"And then..."

The nurse swallowed.

"She asked whether infants inherit everything automatically."

Daniel stared at her.

His pulse thundered in his ears.

"Are you certain?"

"I remember because it disturbed me."

Daniel thanked her and walked toward the parking garage, but every step felt heavier than the last.

Insurance.

Inheritance.

Estate transfers.

None of those questions had anything to do with caring for babies.

That night he didn't confront Claire.

Instead...

He did something Rebecca had once begged him never to stop doing.

He trusted his instincts.

Without telling anyone, Daniel called the head of security for Whitmore Enterprises.

"I need surveillance installed."

"Hidden."

"Every room except the bathrooms."

The security chief paused.

"Is someone threatening your family?"

Daniel looked upstairs toward the nursery.

"I don't know yet."

"But if they are..."

"I want proof."

As he ended the call, he glanced toward the staircase.

Claire stood there in the shadows.

Smiling.

She had no idea...

May you like

The cameras would be recording before sunrise.

And Daniel was about to discover that stealing money was the least dangerous secret she was hiding.
