chapter 8

chapter 8

Alexander ignored the blood running down his face.

"Mateo!"

He ran through smoke-filled hallways while firefighters rushed in the opposite direction.

Isabella screamed from her hospital room.

"My son!"

Agent Cross arrived moments later.

"The explosion was a diversion."

Alexander already knew.

"They took him."

Security cameras from nearby streets were recovered within minutes.

One image froze everyone in the FBI command center.

Captain Roberts carried Mateo into a black SUV.

The little boy was unconscious.

Cross slammed his fist onto the table.

"Roberts has been Phoenix's inside man for fifteen years."

Alexander stared at the screen.

"He was there..."

"The market."

"The dumpster."

"The hospital."

"The warehouse."

"He controlled every investigation."

Cross nodded.

"He always stayed close enough to redirect the truth."

An anonymous message arrived exactly twelve minutes later.

One location.

Liberty Island.

Midnight.

Come alone.

Or the boy dies.

Against FBI orders...

Alexander went.

Fog rolled across New York Harbor as his boat reached the island.

The Statue of Liberty stood above him like a silent witness.

Inside the abandoned maintenance tunnels beneath the monument...

Captain Roberts waited.

Mateo sat tied to a steel chair.

"You came," Roberts smiled.

"I knew you would."

Alexander stared at him.

"Why?"

Roberts sighed.

"Because justice doesn't pay."

"Power does."

"I joined Phoenix thirty years ago."

"I became a police officer because criminals eventually need detectives."

He laughed at his own joke.

"You trusted me."

"So did everyone else."

Alexander stepped closer.

"Where's the Founder?"

Roberts smiled.

"You've been asking the wrong question."

He removed the silver phoenix pin.

Opened it.

Inside was a tiny key.

He inserted it into a hidden safe built into the tunnel wall.

The heavy steel door slowly opened.

Inside...

An empty chair.

A computer.

One envelope.

Nothing else.

Roberts frowned.

"No..."

He ripped open the envelope.

One sentence.

Even you don't know who I am.

The Founder had abandoned everyone.

Including Roberts.

At that exact moment, FBI agents stormed the tunnels from every entrance.

"Federal agents!"

"Drop your weapon!"

Roberts grabbed Mateo.

Using the boy as a shield.

Alexander slowly lowered his hands.

"You don't have to do this."

Roberts shook his head.

"I've already done it."

He pointed his pistol at Mateo.

Alexander saw only one chance.

He threw the old teddy bear across the tunnel.

Instinctively, Mateo looked toward it.

So did Roberts.

That single heartbeat was enough.

Alexander lunged.

The gun fired.

The bullet grazed Alexander's side.

Mateo slipped free.

Agent Cross fired once.

Roberts collapsed.

The nightmare was over.

epilogue

Six months later...

The criminal empire known as Project Phoenix no longer existed.

More than three hundred arrests were made across the United States.

Billions of dollars in illegal assets were seized.

Dozens of innocent victims were finally identified and reunited with their families.

Alexander voluntarily placed every one of his companies under independent financial review.

The investigations proved he had never knowingly participated in the criminal network.

His reputation survived because he chose transparency over pride.

Isabella recovered slowly.

The years stolen from her could never be returned.

But she no longer faced them alone.

Mateo started second grade that fall.

On the first day of school, his teacher asked the class what courage meant.

Some children answered,

"Being strong."

Others said,

"Not being afraid."

Mateo quietly raised his hand.

"Courage means telling the truth..."

"...even when nobody believes you."

That evening, Alexander picked him up from school.

As they walked home, Mateo reached for his hand.

Alexander smiled.

"No more sleeping beside dumpsters."

Mateo smiled back.

"No."

"Because now..."

"I know someone will always come back."

Alexander looked up at the New York skyline.

The city was still loud.

Still imperfect.

But one frightened little boy had reminded thousands of people of a truth they had forgotten.

Sometimes...

May you like

The smallest voice in the crowd is the one everyone should hear first.
