chapter 5

The helicopter landed two blocks from the abandoned Brooklyn shipyard.

Rain hammered the rusted warehouses lining the waterfront.

Police snipers took positions on nearby rooftops.

SWAT teams waited in silence behind shipping containers.

Alexander ignored every order Detective Morales gave him.

“You're not going in alone,” she said.

“They demanded I come alone.”

“They're expecting that.”

Alexander looked toward the enormous warehouse at the end of Pier 19.

“No.”

“They're expecting me to bring an army.”

Morales frowned.

“What are you thinking?”

Alexander stared at the building.

“They've been watching me for years.”

“They know how I negotiate.”

“So this time…”

“I won't.”

Inside the warehouse, Isabella slowly regained consciousness.

Her hands were tied to a steel chair.

Across from her, Mateo was bound to another chair.

“Mom…”

His voice trembled.

“They found us again.”

“I know, sweetheart.”

She forced herself to smile.

“But listen to me.”

“No matter what happens…”

“You keep your eyes on me.”

“You don't look at anyone else.”

Mateo nodded through tears.

A steel door creaked open.

Five armed men entered first.

Then a sixth man walked in.

Unlike the others, he wore no mask.

Expensive Italian shoes.

Tailored navy suit.

Silver hair.

Perfect posture.

He looked more like the chairman of a bank than the leader of a criminal empire.

He smiled politely.

“Good afternoon, Isabella.”

She stared at him in horror.

“You…”

“For seven years,” he said softly, “I wondered how long it would take before Alexander found you.”

Mateo looked at the stranger.

“Who are you?”

The man crouched to meet the boy's eyes.

“My name…”

“…doesn't matter.”

“But your father once called me family.”

Alexander stepped into the warehouse at that exact moment.

His voice echoed across the empty building.

“Richard.”

The older man smiled wider.

“So…”

“You remembered me.”

Alexander's fists clenched.

Richard Sullivan.

His late father's closest business partner.

The man who attended every holiday dinner.

The man who carried Alexander on his shoulders when he was a child.

The man everyone believed had retired to Europe years ago.

“You're supposed to be dead,” Alexander said.

Richard laughed quietly.

“So was Isabella.”

Detective Morales listened through Alexander's hidden microphone from the SWAT command truck.

“Hold your positions,” she whispered.

“We need him talking.”

Inside the warehouse, Alexander took another step forward.

“Why?”

Richard folded his hands behind his back.

“Because your father made one mistake.”

“He discovered where our money really came from.”

Alexander's expression hardened.

“My father disappeared because of you.”

“He disappeared,” Richard corrected, “because he refused to join us.”

“And Isabella?”

“She found documents she should never have seen.”

Richard looked almost disappointed.

“She was very curious.”

“She worked as a financial analyst.”

“She followed numbers.”

“She uncovered thirty years of money laundering.”

Alexander felt the world tilt beneath him.

“You kidnapped her…”

“To protect billions of dollars.”

Richard nodded.

“Exactly.”

One of the armed guards suddenly dragged a metal cart into the center of the warehouse.

On it sat a laptop.

Richard opened it.

“You've become one of the richest developers in America.”

“Congratulations.”

He turned the screen toward Alexander.

Every bank account.

Every company.

Every investment.

Displayed in real time.

“We helped build that empire.”

Alexander frowned.

“I built it.”

Richard smiled.

“No.”

“You built it with companies we secretly financed.”

Alexander's face went pale.

“What?”

“Your father rejected us.”

“You didn't even know you accepted us.”

Silence filled the warehouse.

Richard continued.

“For twenty years…”

“We washed dirty money through your construction projects.”

“You never noticed.”

“You were simply… useful.”

Alexander staggered backward.

Everything he had built…

Every tower.

Every hotel.

Every success.

Could have been funded by blood money.

Richard slid a folder across the floor.

“One signature.”

“Transfer Vargas Holdings into our control.”

“And your little family lives.”

Alexander looked at Isabella.

She slowly shook her head.

“No.”

Richard smiled.

“I knew she'd say that.”

He pulled out a pistol.

Pointed it directly at Mateo.

The boy closed his eyes.

Alexander's heart nearly stopped.

“Sign it,” Richard whispered.

“You have thirty seconds.”

Before Alexander could move…

Mateo suddenly shouted,

“Mom!”

Everyone turned instinctively.

The little boy kicked his chair sideways with all his strength.

The chair crashed into a stack of old paint cans.

They exploded across the concrete floor.

Guards slipped.

One rifle fired accidentally into the ceiling.

Detective Morales yelled through the radio,

“Go! Go! Go!”

Warehouse doors burst open.

May you like

Flashbang grenades detonated.

The entire building erupted into chaos.
