chapter 7

Three days after Richard Sullivan's arrest, New York looked normal again.

Traffic filled the streets.

Construction cranes swung above Manhattan.

News helicopters moved on to the next headline.

But inside FBI Headquarters, nothing felt normal.

Boxes from the underground archive covered an entire evidence room.

Thousands of financial records.

Encrypted hard drives.

Photographs.

Secret ledgers dating back more than forty years.

Detective Lena Morales stood beside FBI Special Agent Daniel Cross.

"We've identified over two hundred shell companies."

Cross nodded.

"But Project Phoenix is different."

He held up a single black folder.

"There are no names."

"No addresses."

"Only one symbol."

A silver phoenix rising from flames.

"The real leader erased himself from history."

Meanwhile, Alexander sat beside Isabella's hospital bed.

For the first time in years, she looked peaceful.

Mateo slept with his head resting on her arm.

Alexander quietly placed the old one-eyed teddy bear on the bed.

"I had it cleaned."

Mateo smiled.

"He says thank you."

Alexander laughed softly.

"He?"

"The bear."

"He protected Mom while I couldn't."

Alexander looked at the toy.

Then back at the little boy.

"No."

"You protected her."

Mateo frowned.

"I'm only seven."

Alexander shook his head.

"Courage isn't measured by age."

Later that afternoon, Agent Cross entered the room.

"We recovered something from Richard's archive."

He handed Alexander an old videotape that had been converted into a digital file.

"You should watch this alone."

The video began with heavy static.

Then...

Alexander's father appeared.

Older.

Tired.

Looking directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this..."

"I'm probably gone."

Alexander's breathing stopped.

His father's voice filled the room.

"Richard isn't the leader."

"Never was."

"The organization answers to someone called the Founder."

"I never learned his real name."

"But I learned his weakness."

"He always hides behind people everyone trusts."

"If I disappear..."

"Never believe the obvious suspect."

"Look for the person helping you."

The video suddenly cut to black.

Alexander replayed the final sentence three times.

Look for the person helping you.

A chill ran down his spine.

Helping him...

Detective Morales.

Agent Cross.

Captain Roberts.

His lawyers.

His executives.

Anyone.

That evening, Captain Roberts arrived with coffee.

"You look exhausted."

Alexander forced a smile.

"I've had better weeks."

Roberts laughed.

"I imagine."

He handed Alexander a paper cup.

"You know..."

"I'm glad you listened to that little boy."

"So am I."

Roberts placed a reassuring hand on Alexander's shoulder.

"You can finally move on."

As Roberts walked away...

Alexander noticed something.

A silver phoenix pin.

Barely visible beneath Roberts' jacket collar.

The exact symbol from Project Phoenix.

Alexander's heart stopped.

He quietly opened the photo of the evidence file on his phone.

Same wings.

Same flames.

Same design.

Roberts turned around.

"You coming?"

Alexander forced himself to smile.

"In a minute."

The captain nodded and disappeared down the hallway.

Alexander immediately called Agent Cross.

"I know who the mole is."

But before he could say another word...

The hospital exploded.

A fireball ripped through the underground parking garage.

The blast shattered every window on the first three floors.

Smoke filled the corridors.

People screamed.

Emergency alarms echoed everywhere.

Alexander hit the floor.

When he looked up...

Captain Roberts was gone.

May you like

So was Mateo.

The little boy had vanished in the chaos.
