chapter 2

chapter 2

The ambulance doors slammed shut.

Red and blue lights painted the wet street while paramedics fought to keep the unconscious woman alive.

“Blood pressure is dropping!”

“Start another IV!”

Mateo tried to climb into the ambulance, but a medic gently stopped him.

“You have to let us work.”

“No!” the little boy cried. “She'll think I left her again!”

Alexander stepped forward without thinking.

“He's coming with me.”

The medic hesitated for only a second before nodding.

“Follow us to Queens General Hospital.”

The ambulance disappeared into morning traffic.

Alexander looked down at the tiny hand clutching his sleeve.

This time…

He didn't pull away.

Twenty minutes later, the emergency room became a blur of doctors, nurses, and police officers.

Mateo sat in a plastic chair, hugging his battered teddy bear.

His shoes were soaked.

His lips still trembled from the cold.

Alexander bought him a blanket from the hospital gift shop and draped it over his shoulders.

The boy whispered something so quietly Alexander almost missed it.

“You came back.”

Alexander swallowed hard.

“Yes.”

“You're the first grown-up who did.”

Those words hurt more than any accusation.

Captain Roberts approached with a notebook.

“We need to identify the victim.”

Alexander looked through the emergency room window.

The doctors were cutting away the filthy clothes from the unconscious woman.

As they removed the torn sleeve from her wrist...

The bracelet became completely visible.

White gold.

Three pear-shaped diamonds.

One tiny sapphire hidden inside the clasp.

Alexander had designed that detail himself.

There was no mistake.

It belonged to Isabella Hart.

The woman he had loved.

The woman who had vanished seven years earlier without leaving a single message.

The woman everyone insisted had abandoned him.

His breathing stopped.

“No...” he whispered.

Roberts frowned.

“You know her?”

Alexander couldn't answer.

Because if that woman was Isabella...

Then who had been lying to him all these years?

Seven years earlier...

Alexander remembered standing at the airport holding a ring.

He had planned to propose that night.

Instead, he received a handwritten note.

I'm sorry.

I have to leave.

Please don't look for me.

You'll be happier without me.

— Isabella

His lawyers searched.

Private investigators searched.

Nothing.

No fingerprints.

No passport activity.

No bank accounts.

No body.

Eventually everyone reached the same conclusion.

She had chosen another life.

Alexander buried himself in work.

He built an empire.

But he never stopped wondering why she disappeared.

Now...

She had been found tied up inside a dumpster.

Someone had wanted her dead.

Someone had wanted the world to think she had vanished by choice.

The emergency room doors opened.

A trauma surgeon stepped outside.

“Who's here for the patient?”

Mateo jumped to his feet.

“I'm her son!”

The doctor softened.

“Your mother is alive, but she's suffered severe dehydration, broken ribs, a concussion, and signs of prolonged captivity.”

Alexander felt his stomach tighten.

“Captivity?”

The doctor nodded.

“These injuries didn't happen overnight.”

“She has scars in different stages of healing.”

“Someone abused her for a long time.”

Silence filled the hallway.

Mateo buried his face in Alexander's side.

“I told everybody they were hurting her.”

Alexander placed a hand on the boy's shoulder.

He had no words.

Only shame.

An hour later, Detective Lena Morales from the NYPD Special Victims Unit arrived.

She spread several photographs across a table.

“We searched the dumpster.”

“There were ropes.”

“Duct tape.”

“A syringe.”

“And tire tracks leading into the alley.”

“This wasn't random.”

She looked directly at Alexander.

“Whoever left her there expected garbage collection to arrive before sunrise.”

Alexander stared at the photographs.

Someone hadn't just tried to hide Isabella.

Someone had planned her execution.

A nurse hurried into the hallway.

“She's waking up.”

Mateo sprinted into the room.

His tiny voice broke as he reached the bed.

“Mom...”

The bruised woman slowly opened her eyes.

She reached toward him with trembling fingers.

“My baby...”

They held each other while every monitor in the room beeped faster.

Even hardened police officers quietly looked away.

Alexander remained near the doorway.

He wasn't sure she would even recognize him.

Then Isabella lifted her head.

Their eyes met.

For a moment, the years disappeared.

Tears rolled silently down her face.

“Alex...”

His name sounded like it hurt.

He stepped closer.

“What happened to you?”

Her lips trembled.

“I tried...”

“I tried to come back.”

“They wouldn't let me.”

Alexander's heartbeat thundered.

“Who?”

She looked toward the hospital door in sudden terror.

“No...”

“No, they're still watching.”

“They said if I ever spoke your name...”

“They would kill Mateo.”

The room fell silent.

Detective Morales immediately signaled two officers.

“Seal this floor.”

“No visitors.”

“No exceptions.”

But before anyone could move...

Every light in the hospital wing flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then the power went out.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Someone screamed down the hallway.

Emergency backup lights flashed on in deep red.

A nurse shouted,

“The security cameras are offline!”

Detective Morales reached for her weapon.

“Everyone stay where you are!”

Then...

A masked figure wearing hospital scrubs stepped through the emergency stairwell door with a silenced pistol hidden beneath a medical chart.

The intruder wasn't there to rescue anyone.

He was there to make sure Isabella never spoke another word.
