Chapter 5 - THE COLD CELL AND THE COUSIN

Deep beneath the Onyx Lounge, in a reinforced concrete basement that smelled of damp earth and industrial bleach, Daniel and Marlene Keene were learning the true meaning of their debt.

They were bound to heavy steel chairs, their wrists secured with industrial zip-ties that had long since cut off their circulation. A single halogen bulb dangled from a frayed cord above them, swinging slightly and creating long, predatory shadows on the walls.

The heavy steel door groaned open, and a young man walked into the room. He wasn't like Marco or the older capos; he was in his late twenties, handsome in a sharp, dangerous way, wearing a dark gray designer suit with a silk pocket square. This was Vincent Vale, Dominic’s nephew and the man who ran the family's logistics and enforcement arms.

Vincent pulled up a wooden stool, flipping it backward and sitting down with a relaxed, terrifying grace. He looked at the bruised, tear-streaked faces of the Keenes with a look of pure, clinical detachment.

"You know," Vincent began, pulling a silver pocket knife from his vest and beginning to clean his fingernails with the tip, "my uncle is a very traditional man. He believes in honor. He believes in the old ways. He thinks everyone deserves a chance to state their piece before they are buried under six feet of New Jersey topsoil."

"Please, Vincent!" Marlene begged, her voice a cracked, dry rattle. "We didn't know! We thought she was just a kid from the clinic! We didn't know she was a Vale!"

Vincent didn't look up from his nails. "See, that’s the part that offends me, Marlene. It’s not just that you stole my cousin—the girl I spent my entire childhood being told was dead. It’s that you brought her here to trade her like a piece of meat to pay off a casino tab. You treated a Vale like a common street girl. That’s a disrespect that extends to me. To my name."

Daniel leaned forward, his voice frantic. "We have information! Tommy... Marlene’s brother. He didn't just panic. He was paid! He was paid by someone inside your own organization to take the baby that night!"

Vincent froze. The silver knife stopped moving. He slowly raised his eyes, which were a dark, obsidian black compared to Dominic’s gray. "Say that again, Daniel. And choose your next words very, very carefully."

"It’s true!" Daniel gasped, desperate for anything that might delay his execution. "Tommy told us before he disappeared into South America. He said a guy named Silvio gave him the keycard to the infant ward. He said Silvio wanted the baby gone so Dominic would lose his mind and let the shipping routes go to the Morettis twenty-three years ago!"

Vincent stood up slowly, folding the pocket knife with a sharp, definitive click. The relaxed demeanor was gone, replaced by a cold, predatory focus. Silvio was one of Dominic’s oldest capos, a man who sat at the dining table just that morning, advising the Don on how to handle the Moretti family.

"Marco!" Vincent called out toward the doorway.

The underboss stepped into the cell, his face hardening as he looked at Vincent. "You heard?"

"I heard," Vincent said, pulling a silk handkerchief from his pocket and wiping his hands as if he had already touched something filthy. "Keep them alive. Don't give them water, don't let them sleep. If Daniel is lying about Silvio, I’ll personally skin him. If he’s telling the truth, we have a rat that has been sitting in our kitchen for more than two decades."

Vincent walked out of the cell, his mind already calculating the structural collapse this information would cause. He knew Dominic was emotional right now—blinded by the miracle of his daughter's return. It fell upon Vincent to ensure that while the Don was celebrating his daughter, the family didn't get a knife in the back from the people they trusted most.
