Chapter 4 - THE SHADOW OF THE RIVAL FAMILY

The next morning, the reality of June’s new life arrived not with a sunrise, but with the sound of breaking glass and spinning tires at the perimeter of the estate.

Harper woke up in a bedroom that was larger than her entire previous apartment, tucked beneath silk sheets that felt like water against her skin. She had barely finished dressing in the high-end clothes Francesca had placed in her walk-in closet when a sharp, rhythmic knock rattled her door.

Marco stood in the hallway, his usual calm demeanor replaced by an intense, tactical alertness. "June, your father wants you in the study immediately. Do not walk near the windows. Keep low."

Harper’s heart leaped into her throat. "What’s happening?"

"Rivals," Marco said shortly, guiding her down the back service staircase. "The Moretti family. They’ve been looking for a vulnerability in the Vale structure for a year. It seems word has traveled that the Don canceled all his meetings yesterday for a girl."

When they entered the mahogany-lined study, the room was filled with tobacco smoke and the low chatter of high-ranking capos. Dominic stood behind his desk, staring at a bank of security monitors that showed a black SUV warped and smoking against the reinforced iron gates of the outer perimeter. A gun battle had occurred ten minutes prior; the asphalt was littered with brass shell casings.

"Don Vale," one of the capos, a brutal-looking man named Silvio, growled. "It’s a message from Anthony Moretti. They know she’s here. They don't know who she is yet, but they know she matters to you. They think she's a mistress or a high-value asset. They’re going to squeeze us until we drop our shipping routes in the harbor."

Dominic didn't look angry; he looked murderously calm. He picked up a heavy silver fountain pen, tapping it against his desk with a slow, hypnotic rhythm.

"Anthony Moretti is an idiot who thinks with his gut," Dominic said, his voice cutting through the smoke like a blade. "He thinks he has found a weakness. He doesn't realize he has just targeted the only thing in this world that I care about more than my own life."

He looked up, seeing Harper standing near the doorway. He immediately gestured for the capos to clear the room. They filed out past her, casting curious, assessing glances at the girl who had turned their world upside down overnight.

"Are you alright?" Dominic asked, walking around the desk to inspect her face for any signs of panic.

"I’m fine," Harper said, though her hands were tightly clenched into fists. "But they’re shooting at your house because of me. If I wasn't here, you wouldn't be in this position."

"Listen to me very carefully," Dominic said, grasping both of her shoulders with an intensity that made her look straight into his gray eyes. "You are not a liability, June. You are my daughter. The Moretti family has been trying to destroy what my father and I built for forty years. They would have found an excuse to strike regardless. But now, they have made the fatal mistake of threatening my blood."

"What are you going to do?"

"I am going to eliminate the threat," Dominic stated simply. "In our world, absolute security is only achieved through absolute dominance. If I show a single second of hesitation, every family from here to New York will think the Vale family has gone soft because a daughter returned. I will show them the exact opposite."

He walked back to his desk and picked up a secure satellite phone. "Marco. Assemble the heavy crews. We are going to pay a personal visit to the Moretti processing plant in Newark tonight. I want Anthony to understand exactly what happens when you knock on my gate."

Harper sat down in a leather armchair, her mind racing. She had spent twenty-four years believing she was a nobody, a ghost sliding through life unnoticed. Now, she was the center of a brewing gang war that could engulf the entire tri-state area. She looked at the small gold locket around her neck, its latch now free, revealing the face of the mother she would never get to meet.

She wasn't Harper Keene anymore. She was June Rose Vale, and whether she liked it or not, the blood in her veins was built for a war.
