Chapter 3 - THE GOLDEN CAGE OF THE VALE ESTATE

The iron gates of the Vale Estate swung open like the jaws of a mythical fortress. Situated deep within the exclusive, heavily wooded enclaves of Alpine, New Jersey, the property was sprawling, surrounded by twelve-foot stone walls topped with security cameras and discrete motion sensors. A long, winding driveway lined with ancient oak trees led up to a massive, stone-fronted European-style manor that overlooked the distant Hudson River.

Harper sat in the plush leather interior of Dominic’s armored sedan, her eyes wide as she took in the sheer scale of the wealth surrounding her. For twenty-four years, her concept of home had been two-bedroom apartments with peeling wallpaper and landlords banging on the door for rent. This place looked like a royal palace, guarded by men in impeccably tailored suits who wore earpieces and carried themselves with quiet, lethal authority.

The car came to a smooth halt under the grand portico. Dominic stepped out first, then reached back in, offering his hand to Harper. She hesitated for a fraction of a second, looking at his calloused palm, before taking it. His grip was warm, reassuring, and completely steady.

"Welcome home, June," he said, his voice tinged with an emotion he was clearly trying to keep under control.

As they walked through the towering double oak doors of the foyer, a woman with silver hair and a sharp, elegant posture stepped down the sweeping marble staircase. She wore a simple, expensive navy dress, and her expression was guarded until her eyes landed on Harper’s face. She froze on the third step, her hand flying to her mouth.

"Dominic..." the woman whispered, her voice trembling. "Is it... is it really her?"

"It’s her, Francesca," Dominic said, a rare, genuine smile breaking across his weathered face. "The locket opened. The scar is there. It’s June."

Francesca—Dominic’s older sister and the matriarch of the household—practically flew down the remaining stairs. She didn't hesitate; she pulled Harper into a fierce, fragrant embrace that smelled of expensive jasmine and old paper. Harper stood completely rigid at first, unaccustomed to physical affection that didn't come with an underlying demand, but slowly, the genuine warmth of the older woman caused her shoulders to drop.

"We never stopped looking," Francesca sobbed into Harper’s hair. "Your father nearly tore the entire country apart. Every year on your birthday, we set a place for you at the table. Look at you. You look exactly like your mother. Rosemary’s eyes... entirely Rosemary’s eyes."

"I... I still feel like I’m dreaming," Harper murmured, stepping back slightly to look around the grand foyer, which featured crystal chandeliers and oil paintings of ancestors she didn't know. "I’ve spent my whole life thinking I was Harper Keene. I don't even know how to be June Rose."

"You don't have to figure it out today," Dominic said gently, placing a hand on her upper back to guide her toward the expansive dining room. "You have all the time in the world. This house, everything I own, belongs to you. You are a Vale. Nobody can ever take that away from you again."

The dinner that followed was a surreal experience. Harper was served dishes she couldn't name by a quiet, professional kitchen staff, using silver utensils that felt heavy and valuable in her hands. Dominic sat at the head of the table, his eyes never truly leaving her, as if he were terrified that if he looked away, she would vanish back into the New Jersey fog.

But beneath the luxury and the overwhelming affection, Harper could feel the undercurrent of danger that defined this world. Every twenty minutes, Marco would step into the dining room, whisper something into Dominic’s ear, and receive a quiet, decisive nod in return. The atmosphere was thick with a brewing storm.

"What are you going to do to them?" Harper asked suddenly, breaking the quiet clinking of silverware.

Dominic paused, his wine glass halfway to his lips. He lowered it slowly, his expression shifting into something guarded. "Your parents—the people who took you—are being held securely. They are being questioned to ensure no one else has this information. They will be handled according to our laws, June."

"Our laws?" Harper questioned, her brow furrowing. "You mean the mafia."

Dominic didn't flinch at the word. "I mean the family. In our world, a transgression of this magnitude—stealing the child of a Don—carries a singular, irreversible penalty. They used you as currency. They took twenty-three years of your life away from me, and they took twenty-three years of a mother’s memory away from Rosemary before she passed. There is no mercy for that."

A cold dread settled in Harper’s stomach. She didn't love Daniel and Marlene; in fact, she despised them for what they had done. But the reality of sitting across from a man who could order their execution between courses of a gourmet meal was a jarring reminder of exactly who her real father was. She was the daughter of a king, but his throne was built on an empire of blood.
