CHAPTER 7 – THE TRUTH JONAH BENNETT BURIED

CHAPTER 7 – THE TRUTH JONAH BENNETT BURIED

The next flight to Georgia left before sunrise.

Clara insisted on going alone.

Dante refused.

"I'm not asking for permission."

She stood in the Moretti hangar with a small overnight bag in one hand and the old photograph in the other.

"I need answers from my father."

"You'll have them."

Dante buttoned his jacket.

"But you're not walking into an ambush by yourself."

Vivian stepped forward before Clara could argue.

"Child..."

She gently touched Clara's cheek.

"Sometimes the truth is more dangerous than a lie."

Clara looked down at the photograph.

"I've lived my whole life believing my family was ordinary."

Vivian's eyes softened.

"And if they weren't?"

"Then I'd rather know."

Three hours later...

Jonah Bennett was waiting outside the small rehabilitation hospital where Noah had been recovering.

He looked twenty years older than when Clara had left Georgia.

The moment he saw Dante beside her, his face went pale.

"So..."

Jonah whispered.

"They found you."

Clara stopped walking.

"What does that mean?"

Her father closed his eyes.

"I prayed this day would never come."

They sat together inside the empty dry-cleaning shop Jonah had once owned.

Dust covered the counters.

The old pressing machines were silent.

Clara remembered playing hide-and-seek there as a child.

Now the building felt like a tomb.

Jonah opened an old ledger hidden beneath the register.

Inside was a faded photograph.

Antonio Moretti.

Vivian.

A much younger Jonah.

And the smiling man from Clara's childhood.

"You knew them?"

Jonah nodded.

"I worked for Antonio."

Clara stared.

"You worked for the Morettis?"

"I protected their legitimate businesses."

"You said you owned this shop."

"I did."

"But before that..."

His voice broke.

"...I was Antonio Moretti's accountant."

Silence swallowed the room.

Dante said nothing.

He simply listened.

Jonah continued.

"When your father was murdered, Dante..."

"I was supposed to testify."

Clara looked at Dante.

"You never told me."

"No one knew."

Jonah lowered his head.

"The night before I was scheduled to appear in court..."

"...someone tried to kill my wife."

Clara's breathing stopped.

"My mother?"

"They couldn't reach me."

"So they targeted her."

Tears filled his eyes.

"She survived the attack..."

"...for three days."

The room fell silent.

Clara had spent twenty years believing her mother had died in a car accident.

It had never been an accident.

Jonah whispered,

"I took my children."

"I changed our names."

"I disappeared."

"And Henry..."

He looked toward Dante.

"...helped us."

Everything suddenly fit together.

The hidden tunnel.

The old photograph.

Henry's silence.

Vivian's instinctive trust in Clara.

The Bennett family had once risked everything to protect the Morettis.

Now history had come full circle.

Before anyone could speak again—

A gunshot shattered the front window.

Glass exploded across the shop.

"DOWN!"

Dante tackled Clara behind the counter.

Three SUVs screeched to a stop outside.

Masked gunmen flooded into the street.

Natalie Russo stepped calmly from the lead vehicle.

She wasn't smiling anymore.

May you like

She held a pistol.

"You should have stayed in New York."
