CHAPTER 3 – THE BRIDE NOBODY CHOSE… EXCEPT VIVIAN

CHAPTER 3 – THE BRIDE NOBODY CHOSE… EXCEPT VIVIAN

By the time Dante Moretti's car rolled through the iron gates, the entire estate had already heard the rumor.

The laundry girl.

The words spread through the mansion faster than smoke.

Housekeepers whispered behind linen carts.

Gardeners stopped trimming hedges.

Even the cooks leaned toward one another over simmering pots.

The five society women still staying in the west wing reacted very differently.

Marissa Vale laughed so hard she nearly spilled her champagne.

"A maid?"

Brielle Kensington shook her head.

"Vivian enjoys humiliating people."

Lauren Whitaker smiled politely, but her fingers crushed the stem of her crystal glass.

Sabrina Cole immediately called her father.

"There has to be another test."

Only Natalie Russo said nothing.

She simply looked out the window toward the servants' quarters.

Her smile was almost invisible.

"A laundry girl..."

she whispered.

"Interesting."

Clara knew none of this.

She was back in the basement folding tablecloths, trying desperately to convince herself that the morning had been nothing more than a strange misunderstanding.

Vivian had been emotional.

Old family memories.

Nothing more.

People like Clara did not become part of families like the Morettis.

They disappeared quietly after finishing their shift.

She had almost managed to believe that—

until the elevator doors opened.

Two women in black suits stepped into the laundry room.

Every employee stopped working.

The older woman smiled.

"Miss Bennett?"

Clara stood.

"Yes?"

"Mrs. Moretti requests your presence."

"I've already seen her."

"She insists."

Miguel avoided Clara's eyes.

That bothered her more than anything.

Vivian was no longer wearing her silk breakfast robe.

She stood in the private drawing room dressed in an elegant navy suit, as though preparing for a board meeting instead of family business.

On the table rested five leather folders.

One was open.

Clara recognized her own driver's license photograph.

Her stomach tightened.

"You investigated me?"

Vivian looked up calmly.

"I verify people before I trust them."

"You read my file?"

"I read everything."

Clara's face flushed.

"My family's financial records?"

"Yes."

"My brother's medical history?"

"Yes."

"My university transcripts?"

"Yes."

"My church volunteer work?"

"Yes."

"My references?"

"Every one."

Clara swallowed.

"Why?"

Vivian closed the folder.

"Because you returned the ring."

"I don't understand."

"You will."

Vivian stood and walked toward the window.

"My husband believed power came from fear."

"My son believes power comes from control."

"I've lived long enough to know real power comes from character."

She turned.

"The ring wasn't a family heirloom."

Clara stared.

"What?"

"It is an heirloom."

Vivian smiled.

"But losing it wasn't an accident."

Clara slowly realized the truth.

"You planted it."

"Yes."

"In the jacket."

"Yes."

"It was a test."

"Yes."

"For the women courting Dante?"

Vivian nodded.

"And for anyone else fate decided to include."

Clara felt almost offended.

"You tested us."

"I observed choices."

"You tempted people."

"I offered opportunity."

"And if someone had stolen it?"

Vivian's expression hardened.

"Then they would never have entered my family."

A quiet knock interrupted them.

The butler entered.

"Mr. Moretti has arrived."

Vivian smiled.

"Perfect timing."

Dante entered without announcing himself.

The room instantly felt smaller.

He wore a charcoal suit with rain still glistening across one shoulder.

His eyes found Clara immediately.

He studied her the same way a detective studies a crime scene.

Not rudely.

Precisely.

Clara instinctively lowered her gaze.

"So."

His voice was calm.

"You're the woman who has overturned my mother's household."

"I didn't mean to."

"I believe you."

Vivian interrupted.

"Dante."

"No."

His attention remained on Clara.

"I'd like to ask her something."

Clara nodded carefully.

"If you're offered ten million dollars today..."

"...would you leave this house and never come back?"

Vivian frowned.

"Dante."

He ignored her.

Clara answered without hesitation.

"Yes."

The room froze.

Even Dante looked surprised.

"You would?"

"My family needs it."

"And me?"

Clara blinked.

"You don't know me."

"And if marrying me solved all your problems?"

She met his eyes.

"I don't marry strangers."

Vivian laughed softly.

Dante didn't.

Instead...

he smiled.

Only slightly.

For the first time in years.

That tiny smile did not go unnoticed.

Standing outside the half-open door...

Natalie Russo watched everything.

She quietly stepped back before anyone saw her.

Then she dialed a number.

"It happened."

A man's voice answered.

"Which phase?"

"Dante smiled."

Silence.

Then—

"Kill the girl."

Natalie's expression didn't change.

"When?"

"Before Vivian announces the engagement."

She ended the call.

For the first time all day...

she looked almost sorry.

That evening, Clara packed her suitcase.

Not because she believed she was in danger.

Because she intended to resign.

She wrote a short letter.

Mrs. Moretti,

Thank you for your kindness, but I do not belong in your world.

Please forgive my sudden departure.

She folded the note.

Picked up her suitcase.

Opened the servant entrance—

A black SUV screeched sideways across the driveway.

Three masked men jumped out.

One shouted—

"There she is!"

Everything happened at once.

Gunfire exploded across the courtyard.

Glass shattered.

Servants screamed.

The estate lights went dark.

Someone grabbed Clara from behind.

A rough hand covered her mouth.

She kicked wildly—

The attacker dragged her toward the waiting vehicle.

"Move!"

She bit his hand.

He cursed.

Another man raised his pistol.

Before he could fire—

A single gunshot echoed from the balcony.

His weapon flew out of his hand.

Everyone turned.

Dante Moretti stood above them.

Perfectly still.

One hand holding a pistol.

The other in his pocket.

His voice carried across the courtyard.

"You came onto my property..."

He fired again.

The second attacker's tire exploded.

"...without permission."

The SUV crashed into a fountain.

Moretti security poured from every entrance.

The kidnappers scattered.

Within thirty seconds—

It was over.

Clara stood shaking.

Dante walked toward her.

He removed his suit jacket.

Placed it gently around her shoulders.

Then quietly asked,

"Are you hurt?"

She couldn't answer.

She simply stared at him.

Because there was blood...

running down his sleeve.

Not hers.

May you like

His.

He had been shot protecting her.
