CHAPTER 6 – THE SECRET BENEATH THE LAUNDRY ROOM

CHAPTER 6 – THE SECRET BENEATH THE LAUNDRY ROOM
The old blueprint was hidden behind a loose brick.
Clara found it by accident.
She had returned to the basement laundry room before dawn, hoping familiar work would quiet her racing thoughts.
Instead, while moving an antique pressing cabinet, she noticed something strange.
The cabinet wasn't against the wall.
There was a narrow gap.
Inside...
a small rusted metal box.
She opened it carefully.
No money.
No jewels.
Only faded blueprints of the estate dated 1954.
Across the bottom someone had written by hand:
Emergency Tunnel – Family Use Only
Clara frowned.
A tunnel?
Footsteps echoed behind her.
She quickly folded the papers.
"Couldn't sleep?"
Dante's voice startled her.
She turned too fast.
The blueprints slipped from her hands.
They landed at his feet.
He bent down.
Looked at them.
His expression changed instantly.
"Where did you get these?"
"They were hidden."
He examined the aging paper.
"I've never seen this version."
"You didn't know?"
"My father redesigned the estate after the shooting."
He looked again.
"This tunnel..."
"...isn't on any current security map."
Both of them realized the same thing.
Someone else could already know it existed.
Upstairs, Vivian was reviewing records with the elderly butler, Henry.
When Dante entered carrying the blueprint, Henry's face drained of color.
"No..."
the old man whispered.
"It survived."
Vivian looked sharply at him.
"You've seen this?"
Henry nodded slowly.
"I buried it."
"When?"
"The night your husband died."
Silence filled the room.
Henry removed his glasses.
"There was another entrance."
"What entrance?"
He hesitated.
Then spoke the words he had kept secret for fifteen years.
"The man who killed Antonio Moretti..."
"...didn't come through the front gate."
Vivian stood.
"What are you saying?"
"He came..."
Henry pointed toward the blueprint.
"...through the tunnel beneath the laundry room."
The room became deathly still.
That meant one horrifying thing.
The Moretti family had never been betrayed from outside.
They had been betrayed...
from inside the house.
Before anyone could speak further—
An explosion shook the entire estate.
Windows shattered.
Alarms screamed.
Smoke rose from the west security gate.
A guard burst into the room.
"Sir!"
"What happened?"
"The evidence room!"
"What about it?"
"It exploded."
Dante's face hardened.
"The prisoner?"
"Gone."
Natalie Russo had vanished.
The captured kidnapper was dead.
Every file connected to the attack had burned.
Only one thing remained untouched inside the destroyed evidence vault.
A small white envelope.
Addressed by hand.
To Clara Bennett.
Dante picked it up carefully.
Inside was a single photograph.
It showed Clara as a little girl standing outside her father's dry-cleaning shop in Georgia.
Next to her...
stood a smiling man she had always believed was merely one of her father's old customers.
On the back, written in black ink, were seven chilling words:
"Ask your father who he really was."
Clara stared at the photograph.
Her hands began to shake.
Because she suddenly remembered something.
That man hadn't been a customer.
He had visited every birthday.
Every Christmas.
Every school recital.
And when he disappeared fifteen years earlier...
Her father had cried.
Not like someone losing a friend.
Like someone burying a brother.
Dante slowly looked up from the photograph.
For the first time...
he realized Clara Bennett had not stumbled into the Moretti family's war.
She had been connected to it since childhood.
And somewhere, hidden behind the smoke of the burning estate, Natalie Russo watched the flames from inside a waiting car.
She smiled faintly as she whispered into her phone.
"Now they know the girl is part of the past."
The voice on the other end replied,
"They know nothing."
A pause.
May you like
"The truth begins with her father."
And the call disconnected.
