CHAPTER 5 – THE PRICE OF PROTECTION

CHAPTER 5 – THE PRICE OF PROTECTION

The phone rang at 2:17 a.m.

Clara had not slept.

Every time she closed her eyes, she saw masked men, flashing gunfire, and Dante standing in front of her as the bullet tore through his shoulder.

She answered on the second ring.

"Hello?"

The silence lasted three seconds.

Then came her father's voice.

"Clara..."

She immediately sat upright.

"Dad? What's wrong?"

Jonah Bennett was trying to sound calm.

He failed.

"It's Noah."

Her heart stopped.

"What happened?"

"There was... there was a man."

The words came in broken pieces.

"He said he was checking the oxygen system."

"The nurses never sent him."

"He tried to get into Noah's room."

Clara's fingers turned white around the phone.

"What?"

"They caught him before he reached the bed."

"The police say he disappeared."

A wave of nausea crashed through her.

"Is Noah okay?"

"Yes."

"But, sweetheart..."

Jonah lowered his voice.

"The man left something."

"What?"

"A note."

Clara could barely breathe.

Her father unfolded the paper.

"It says..."

"Tell the laundry girl to stop washing away other people's secrets."

The line went dead.

Less than five minutes later, Dante entered the estate's security command center.

Every screen showed a different camera angle.

Every analyst stood the moment he walked in.

He listened without interrupting as the head of security finished speaking.

"The hospital intrusion happened exactly twenty-three minutes after Miss Bennett was placed under family protection."

Dante looked at the timeline.

"They're coordinated."

"Yes, sir."

"They want leverage."

"Yes, sir."

Vivian entered moments later.

She didn't ask for coffee.

She didn't ask for updates.

She looked only at her son.

"They touched the boy."

Dante nodded once.

"Yes."

Vivian's eyes became colder than anyone in the room had ever seen.

"Then this is no longer business."

"No."

"It's family."

An hour later, Clara stood outside Dante's office.

She had made her decision.

When she entered, he was reading intelligence reports with his injured arm in a sling.

"I need to leave."

He didn't look up.

"No."

"You don't understand."

"I understand perfectly."

"My family is in danger because of me."

"No."

He finally lifted his eyes.

"They're in danger because of me."

Silence filled the office.

"If I disappear—"

"They'll still use your family."

"If I resign—"

"They'll assume you're vulnerable."

"If I go home—"

"You'll lead them straight to your father."

Every answer was calm.

Every answer destroyed another one of her plans.

"What am I supposed to do?"

"For now..."

he said quietly,

"...trust me."

She laughed bitterly.

"I don't even know you."

"No."

"But I know them."

He slid a folder across the desk.

Inside were photographs.

Her father.

Her grandmother.

Noah.

Security maps.

Hospital layouts.

License plates.

Financial records.

Every detail.

"You've been watching my family?"

"I started yesterday."

"Without asking me?"

"I wasn't protecting your privacy."

He met her gaze.

"I was protecting your life."

That afternoon, Vivian announced a formal dinner.

Not for celebration.

For observation.

The remaining women were invited.

So were senior members of the Moretti organization.

Everyone assumed Vivian would reveal her choice.

Instead...

she seated Clara directly beside Dante.

The room fell silent.

Marissa nearly dropped her wineglass.

Lauren looked physically ill.

Natalie smiled.

Too pleasantly.

Vivian noticed.

She noticed everything.

Dinner progressed politely until dessert.

Then Vivian placed the heirloom ring in the center of the table.

"This ring," she said softly, "has judged five women."

She looked at each of them.

"It found only one honest hand."

Marissa stood.

"This is ridiculous!"

"My family donated millions—"

Vivian interrupted.

"And yet..."

"You still stole."

Marissa stormed out.

Lauren followed.

Sabrina left without a word.

Within minutes, only Natalie remained.

She lifted her wineglass.

"Congratulations, Miss Bennett."

Clara offered a polite smile.

"Thank you."

"I hope..."

Natalie said gently,

"...you're stronger than you look."

Something in her voice made Dante glance toward her.

For the briefest moment...

Natalie's eyes met his.

No warmth.

No affection.

Only calculation.

He filed it away.

Late that night, security reviewed footage from the dinner.

One analyst suddenly froze the video.

"Sir..."

Dante walked over.

"What?"

The analyst enlarged the image.

Natalie's bracelet reflected a tiny red light.

Not jewelry.

A miniature camera.

She had recorded everything.

Dante's expression darkened.

"Track every movement she made tonight."

"Yes, sir."

"And don't arrest her."

The analyst blinked.

"Sir?"

"I want her to feel safe."

May you like

Because predators...

made mistakes when they believed they were winning.
