CHAPTER 5: The Man Everyone Buried Walked Through the Smoke

CHAPTER 5: The Man Everyone Buried Walked Through the Smoke
"Federal agents! Drop your weapons!"
The command rolled through the maternity wing like thunder.
Boots pounded across the marble floor.
Black tactical uniforms flooded the corridor.
Red laser sights swept over every doorway.
The surviving mercenaries barely had time to react before they found themselves surrounded from both ends of the hallway.
One raised his rifle.
A flash-bang exploded.
Three seconds later he was face-down on the floor in handcuffs.
Mateo lowered his pistol only slightly.
These weren't local police.
These men moved with military precision.
At their center walked a tall man in a navy tactical jacket marked with a small federal insignia.
Silver touched the sides of his dark hair.
A scar ran across his left cheek.
His eyes locked on Vincenzo.
"You've been difficult to find."
Vincenzo stared at him as if seeing a ghost.
"...Impossible."
The man removed his protective glasses.
"You've said that twice tonight."
Genevieve gasped.
Her lips trembled.
"...Ethan?"
The man turned toward the operating room.
His expression softened for the first time.
"Hello, Evie."
Tears flooded her eyes.
"My God..."
She couldn't believe what she was seeing.
Her older cousin, Ethan Bellamy.
Leo's cousin.
The FBI agent who had supposedly died four years earlier during an undercover operation against international arms traffickers.
He was alive.
Vincenzo slowly backed away.
"No..."
Ethan smiled without warmth.
"You arranged my funeral beautifully."
Another federal agent stepped beside him carrying a thick evidence case.
"We've been investigating you for nine years, Vincenzo."
Nine years.
The old man's calm façade cracked.
"You infiltrated my organization."
"No."
Ethan shook his head.
"I infiltrated yours before you even realized you had one."
He looked toward Alessandro.
"Mr. Romano..."
Alessandro remained beside Genevieve, blood soaking through the bandage wrapped around his shoulder.
"You know him?"
"We met once."
Alessandro frowned.
"When?"
"At your wedding."
Memory returned instantly.
A quiet cousin from Genevieve's mother's side.
Someone who left early.
Someone Alessandro barely noticed.
Ethan continued.
"Leo recruited me before he died."
The room became silent.
Genevieve's eyes widened.
"What?"
"He suspected someone inside the Romano organization was manipulating both families."
She shook her head.
"Why didn't he tell me?"
"Because he knew you'd try to protect him."
Ethan's voice grew quieter.
"He wanted evidence before involving you."
He turned toward Vincenzo.
"He found it."
The old consigliere laughed.
Not nervously.
Almost proudly.
"So Leo really was clever."
He nodded slowly.
"I underestimated him."
Genevieve felt her stomach twist.
"You..."
Her voice barely existed.
"You admitted it."
Vincenzo looked directly at her.
"I ordered Leo's death."
Silence.
"I also arranged the fake recording."
Another silence.
"I convinced you Alessandro murdered him."
Genevieve stared in horror.
"I forged every phone call."
"I created every bank transfer."
"I manufactured every witness."
He smiled.
"And you believed every word."
Genevieve buried her face in her hands.
A broken sob escaped her.
Alessandro wanted to hold her.
He didn't.
Not yet.
Ethan opened the evidence case.
Inside sat dozens of hard drives.
Financial records.
Encrypted phones.
Photographs.
Audio recordings.
"We recovered these from three countries."
He looked toward the federal agents.
"Play file seventeen."
A technician connected a portable speaker.
Seconds later—
Vincenzo's own voice filled the operating room.
"I don't care if Romano survives."
"I only need the wife gone before the child is born."
Another recording.
"The Costas are useful fools."
Another.
"Once Alessandro kills enough of them, both families will collapse."
Another.
"The empire belongs to me."
Every sentence had a date.
A timestamp.
Government authentication.
Impossible to deny.
The room remained completely still.
Mateo closed his eyes.
Twelve years.
He had obeyed orders from a monster.

Vincenzo sighed.
"So."
He looked around.
"I suppose this is where everyone expects me to surrender."
Nobody answered.
The old man smiled.
"I've never liked disappointing audiences."
His hand moved faster than anyone expected.
Not toward Alessandro.
Not toward Genevieve.
Toward one of the wounded mercenaries lying against the wall.
Hidden beneath the man's body armor was a remote detonator.
Vincenzo pressed it.
Nothing happened.
His smile disappeared.
He pressed it again.
Still nothing.
Ethan calmly held up another device.
"Looking for this?"
The FBI had already jammed the signal.

For the first time in thirty years...
Vincenzo looked afraid.
