CHAPTER 3: The Shot That Changed Everything

CHAPTER 3: The Shot That Changed Everything

The suppressed gunshot sounded almost gentle.

A soft metallic thump.

Yet everyone in the operating room believed they had just witnessed the end of the Romano bloodline.

Alessandro reacted on instinct.

He threw himself across Genevieve's body without thinking, his broad frame shielding her from the bullet.

The impact slammed into his shoulder.

Bone cracked.

Blood exploded across the sterile drapes.

He didn't even cry out.

Dr. Hayes shouted, "Keep pressure! Nobody stops this surgery!"

Mateo answered with three rapid shots.

The first shattered Vincenzo's cane.

The second struck a mercenary beside him.

The third forced the old man behind the ruined doorway.

The hallway erupted into another firefight.

Bullets chewed through drywall.

Fire sprinklers burst overhead.

Cold water rained over blood, surgical instruments, and shattered glass.

Inside the room, however, another battle was being fought.

"The baby's heart is gone," whispered one resident.

Dr. Hayes looked at the fetal monitor.

A flat line.

No movement.

No rhythm.

Then he ignored it.

"Monitor malfunction."

The young doctor blinked.

"What?"

"The explosion damaged the leads."

He reached inside the incision with extraordinary precision.

"There."

His fingertips found the umbilical cord.

Twisted.

Compressed.

Nearly white from lack of blood flow.

"That's our problem."

He looked at the surgical nurse.

"Clamp."

She handed it over instantly.

With one controlled movement, he released the pressure around the cord.

The monitor suddenly chirped.

Beep.

Everyone froze.

Another.

Beep... Beep... Beep...

The baby's heartbeat returned.

Not strong.

Not normal.

But alive.

A collective breath escaped the room.

"We have him," Dr. Hayes said.

"No mistakes now."

Outside the operating room...

Vincenzo calmly stepped over two dead mercenaries.

His white hair was wet from the sprinklers, yet his tailored coat somehow still looked immaculate.

He smiled faintly.

"So predictable."

He nodded once.

Hidden shooters emerged from both stairwells.

Mateo's expression changed.

"Damn..."

It had been a diversion.

While Romano men defended the hallway, another team had circled behind them.

Crossfire erupted instantly.

Two Romano soldiers fell before they could turn.

Another collapsed protecting a nurse trying to crawl away.

Mateo dragged the terrified woman behind cover.

"Stay down!"

She sobbed uncontrollably.

"I have children..."

"You'll see them again."

Then he leaned around the corner and emptied another magazine.

Inside surgery...

Alessandro's wounded shoulder poured blood onto the floor.

Dr. Hayes glanced up.

"If you collapse, you contaminate my field."

"I'm fine."

"No, you're bleeding to death."

"I'm staying."

The doctor held his gaze.

For a long moment neither man spoke.

Finally Dr. Hayes nodded.

"Then don't move."

Genevieve watched Alessandro sway on his feet.

His face had become ghostly pale.

Blood dripped steadily from his fingertips.

"You've been shot..."

"I've had worse."

She almost laughed.

"You always lie when you're hurt."

He managed the smallest smile.

"You remembered."

Another contraction shook her body despite the surgery.

Tears slid down her cheeks.

"I thought..."

She struggled to breathe.

"I thought you stopped loving me."

Alessandro stared at her.

"I stopped sleeping."

Silence.

"I stopped eating."

Another silence.

"I stopped being human."

His voice trembled.

"The only thing I never stopped doing..."

He squeezed her hand gently.

"...was looking for you."

Genevieve finally broke completely.

"I'm sorry."

"So am I."

"I should've asked you."

"I should've answered before you needed to ask."

For the first time in seven months...

Neither of them looked away.

Twenty feet outside...

Vincenzo checked his watch.

He sounded almost disappointed.

"They're taking too long."

One mercenary approached.

"The child should already be delivered."

Vincenzo nodded.

"Then we go inside."

"You'll kill Romano yourself?"

The old man smiled.

"No."

He looked toward the operating room.

"I want him to watch his son die first."

Back inside...

Dr. Hayes suddenly reached deeper into the incision.

"I've got the head."

The nurses moved into perfect rhythm.

"Push."

Genevieve cried out.

Again.

"Push!"

Outside—

Gunfire.

Explosions.

Men screaming.

Inside—

Only one life mattered.

One final push.

Dr. Hayes lifted the baby free.

A tiny body.

Completely still.

Blue.

Silent.

No cry.

The room froze.

One nurse whispered,

"Oh no..."

Dr. Hayes immediately clamped the cord.

"Resuscitation table!"

The newborn was rushed across the room.

No movement.

No breathing.

No sound.

The pediatric team began compressions.

Tiny fingers.

Tiny ribs.

Tiny lungs refusing to wake.

Genevieve looked desperately toward them.

"Why isn't he crying?"

Nobody answered.

Alessandro couldn't move.

He had survived assassinations.

Bombings.

Wars.

But watching his son lie motionless...

...was unbearable.

Thirty seconds.

Nothing.

Forty-five.

Nothing.

One minute.

Still nothing.

The room became terrifyingly quiet.

Dr. Hayes looked at the clock.

Again.

"Continue."

Another ventilation.

Another compression.

Then—

A tiny cough.

Barely audible.

Another.

Suddenly—

A furious newborn scream exploded through the operating room.

The loudest, angriest cry anyone had ever heard.

Everyone stopped.

Then smiled.

Several nurses openly cried.

Dr. Hayes actually laughed.

"There you are..."

The baby screamed even louder.

Healthy.

Alive.

Perfect.

Genevieve burst into tears.

Alessandro covered his face with his bloody hand.

His knees nearly gave out.

"My son..."

The nurse wrapped the infant quickly.

"A beautiful boy."

She carried him toward his parents.

Before she could reach them—

May you like

The lights went out.

Total darkness.
