Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

The emergency board meeting was packed to capacity. The air inside the room was thick with tension, with factions of shareholders arguing loudly over who should take Julian’s place.
Eleanor Vance sat at the center of the table, practically glowing with arrogance. Victoria sat behind her in the gallery, already celebrating.
The heavy oak doors opened, and Julian walked in. He was alone, his expression stoic and unreadable. He took his seat at the head of the table.
“Let’s bring this meeting to order,” Eleanor said, slamming her palms on the table. “Julian, the evidence of your gross negligence and your assistant’s treason is undeniable. The board has prepared a resolution to strip you of your executive powers effective immediately. Do you have anything to say before we vote?”
Julian leaned back in his leather chair, steepling his fingers. “Actually, I do. Before we vote on my removal, I’d like to introduce a late submission to the record. Maya, please bring in the files.”
The side doors of the boardroom flew open.
Maya stepped into the room. She was no longer wearing her thrift-store blouse. She wore a sharp, tailored navy blue power suit that hugged her perfectly. Her platinum hair was styled elegantly, her posture tall, proud, and completely unbothered. She walked with the absolute confidence of a woman who owned the room.
Eleanor jumped out of her chair, her face contorting with rage. “What is the meaning of this? This criminal has been fired! Security, get her out!”
“Sit down, Eleanor,” Julian commanded, his voice echoing through the microphone system like thunder.
Maya walked to the main projector console, plugged in her tablet, and hit play.
The massive digital screens lining the boardroom walls lit up. Instantly, the video of Eleanor Vance stealing the files in the server room began to play in full high-definition. Beside the video, a massive financial spreadsheet appeared, tracing the fifty thousand dollar bribe from Eleanor’s family account straight to Maya’s routing number.
The boardroom erupted into absolute bedlam. Board members gasped, leaping to their feet, pointing at the screens.
“This is a fabrication! A lie!” Eleanor screamed, her face turning a ghastly shade of pale gray as she looked at the undeniable proof of her treason.
“It’s over, Eleanor,” Maya said, her voice clear, calm, and perfectly controlled over the noise. “The Chicago Police Department and the Securities and Exchange Commission are waiting downstairs in the lobby. We sent them the encrypted data package twenty minutes ago.”
Victoria panicked, grabbing her designer bag and trying to slip out the back door, but two corporate security officers blocked her path, shaking their heads.
The lead board member, an elderly billionaire who had been a close friend of Julian’s father, slammed his gavel on the table. “Silence! Eleanor Vance, you are stripped of your title, your shares are frozen pending criminal investigation, and you are terminated from this company effective immediately.”

He turned to Julian, a look of profound respect on his face. “Mr. Vance, it seems you have saved this company from a cancer. And your assistant… is remarkable.”
Julian smiled, looking up at Maya with a pride so intense it shone in his eyes. “Yes, she is.”
