Chapter 6 - The Setup

The day before the massive board meeting, the energy on the 50th floor was electric. The Tokyo merger was the biggest deal in Vance International’s history, a move that would solidify Julian’s legacy as a visionary leader.

At 3:00 p.m., Julian called Maya into his office. He looked exhausted but energized.

“Maya, I need the encrypted flash drive containing the final valuation models for the Tokyo board,” he said, pointing to a small, heavy silver safe in the corner of his office. “The code is Liam’s birthday. I changed it last week.”

Maya’s heart swelled at the detail. He had used her son’s birthday as his secure code. “I’ll get it right now.”

She walked over, keyed in the numbers, and retrieved the small silver flash drive. She handed it to him, their fingers brushing. A sudden jolt of electricity passed between them, and Julian didn't let go of the drive immediately. He held her gaze.

“After tomorrow, when this deal is done,” Julian said softly, his voice thick with unexpressed emotion, “things are going to change around here, Maya. For us. I’m tired of pretending this is just about work.”

Maya swallowed hard, her heart pounding against her ribs. “Julian, we can't. Your family, the board—”

“I don't care about the board,” Julian said firmly, stepping closer to her. “I care about you.”

Before she could answer, his desk phone rang loudly. It was the compliance team from the European division. Julian sighed, giving her a reassuring look before picking up the phone. Maya stepped out of the office, her head spinning with a mix of terrifying joy and deep anxiety.

An hour later, Julian left the floor to attend a mandatory pre-board dinner downtown. “Lock the final documents in the main server room before you leave tonight, Maya,” he instructed as he boarded the elevator. “I trust you.”

By 9:00 p.m., Maya was finished. She walked to the high-security server room at the end of the hall, swiped her access card, and placed the secondary backup drives into the secure vault.

What she didn't know was that the moment she swiped her card and left the building, a hidden figure emerged from the stairwell.

It was Eleanor Vance. Using an administrative override card that bypassed the standard logging protocols, Eleanor entered the server room. She pulled out a high-speed cloning device, plugged it into the main terminal, and downloaded the entire confidential Tokyo merger portfolio.
