Chapter 8 - The Counter-Strike

Maya spent the next twenty-four hours trapped in a living nightmare. She sat in her small apartment, holding Liam tight against her chest, watching the news reports of the Vance International scandal cycle endlessly on her television. She felt dirty, broken, and utterly defeated. She had finally crawled her way out of the gutter, only to be pushed back in by people who played with lives like chess pieces.

At 10:00 p.m., a knock echoed through her front door.

Maya stiffened, terror gripping her throat. Was it the police?

She walked slowly to the door, checking the peephole. Her breath caught.

Standing on the crumbling porch, drenched in the Chicago rain under a familiar black umbrella, was Julian.

Maya threw the door open, her anger boiling over. “What are you doing here? Come to gloat? Come to tell me how stupid I was to trust you?”

Julian didn't say a word. He stepped into the apartment, closed the door behind him, and pulled a small electronic tablet from his briefcase.

“I had to play along in the boardroom, Maya,” Julian said, his voice urgent, his eyes burning with absolute determination. “Eleanor controls a faction of the board. If I had defended you without proof, they would have removed me instantly and locked down the corporate network before I could find the truth.”

Maya blinked through her tears. “The truth?”

“Look at this,” Julian said, handing her the tablet.

On the screen was a detailed cyber-forensic report. “The fifty thousand dollar wire transfer to your account didn't come from Tokyo. Our global IT security team traced the routing numbers through a series of Swiss banks. The original source of the funds came from a private account owned by Eleanor Vance’s husband.”

Maya’s jaw dropped. “She framed me.”

“And that’s not all,” Julian continued, a dangerous smile touching his lips. “Eleanor thought she was clever using an administrative override card to enter the server room. What she didn't know is that I installed an independent, biometric AI security system in that specific vault last month. It doesn't care about keycards. It scans heat signatures and facial geometry.”

Julian tapped the screen, playing a crystal-clear video clip. The video showed Eleanor Vance entering the server room at 9:25 p.m., pulling out a cloning device, and downloading the files.

“She used her keycard access to delete her presence from the basic digital logs and alter the timestamps to match your departure time,” Julian explained, stepping closer to Maya, his eyes soft with profound apology. “I am so sorry, Maya. I hated letting them drag your name through the mud today. But I needed them to think they had succeeded so they wouldn't destroy the evidence.”

Maya looked at him, the heavy weight of betrayal instantly lifting from her chest, replaced by an overwhelming wave of relief. “You believed me.”

May you like

“I’ve believed in you since the moment you fell asleep on my shoulder,” Julian said softly. He reached out, his hand cupping her cheek, wiping away a stray tear with his thumb. “Tomorrow morning is the final emergency board vote to remove me as CEO. Are you ready to go to work?”

Maya wiped her face, a fierce, unstoppable fire igniting in her eyes. “Let me get my suit.”
