Chapter 3 - The CEO’s Mandate

The silence in the room was deafening. Eleanor Vance looked as if she had just swallowed a fly, her mouth opening and closing without producing a sound.
“Julian,” Eleanor finally managed to stammer, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. “Her resume. She has no experience. She’s a grocery clerk.”
“She works two jobs while raising a son by herself, Eleanor,” Julian said, his voice calm but laced with an icy finality that brooked no argument. “That requires a level of grit, time management, and resilience that half of our executive board doesn't possess. Experience can be taught. Character cannot.”
Julian walked over to the table, picking up Maya’s printed resume. He didn't look at the employment gaps; he looked at the high GPA from her two years of college before she dropped out.
“Maya,” Julian said, turning to her, his tone softening instantly to the warm, familiar voice from the night before. “The executive assistant position on the 50th floor just opened up. It pays eighty-five thousand a year, full health benefits, childcare subsidies, and paid time off. The hours are demanding, but there are no double shifts. Do you want it?”
Maya’s mind went entirely blank. Eighty-five thousand dollars. It was more than three times what she made working herself to the bone at both of her current jobs combined. It meant a safe apartment. It meant Liam’s future.
“Yes,” she whispered, her voice cracking just as it had on the bus. “Yes, I want it.”
“Excellent,” Julian said, handing the resume back to a stunned Eleanor. “Process her paperwork immediately. She starts tomorrow morning at eight. My office.”
Without another word, Julian turned and walked out of the room, leaving a trail of shocked silence in his wake.
Eleanor turned her gaze back to Maya, the obsequious warmth she had shown Julian instantly hardening into pure venom. She slapped a stack of onboarding documents onto the table.
“I don't know what kind of game you’re playing, or how you managed to trap my nephew on a public bus,” Eleanor hissed, leaning across the table. “But let me make one thing clear to you, Miss Collins. Julian may be the CEO, but the Vance family owns this board. You do not belong here. The moment you slip up—and you will—I will personally ensure you are thrown out of this building onto the street. Fill out the forms.”

Maya looked at the venomous woman in front of her. For the first time in years, she didn't feel afraid. She picked up the pen, her hand steady.
“Where do I sign?” Maya asked, looking Eleanor straight in the eye.
