CHAPTER 6 — HELENA'S LAST GAME

CHAPTER 6 — HELENA'S LAST GAME

The reunion should have been joyful.

Instead...

It lasted less than two minutes.

A convoy of black SUVs raced toward Grace's cottage.

Adrian's head of security shouted,

"Incoming!"

Doors flew open.

Armed men poured onto the property.

Not police.

Private mercenaries.

Their leader raised a megaphone.

"Mr. Whitmore!"

"Hand over the child."

"Nobody gets hurt."

Grace's face drained of color.

"They found us..."

Adrian immediately stepped in front of Emma.

Lily pulled the frightened little girl into her arms.

Emma looked up.

"Grandma..."

"Who are these people?"

Grace whispered,

"The monsters I hoped you'd never meet."

Gunfire erupted.

Security agents returned fire from behind stone walls.

Windows shattered.

Flower pots exploded.

Emma screamed as Lily shielded her with her own body.

Adrian grabbed a radio.

"Get them to the panic room!"

"There isn't one!" Grace shouted.

"It's just a cottage!"

Adrian scanned the property.

His eyes landed on an old storm cellar hidden beneath the barn.

"There!"

While security held the attackers back, Adrian, Lily, Grace, and Emma sprinted across the yard.

Bullets ripped through the wooden fence.

One struck the ground inches from Emma's feet.

Adrian scooped the little girl into his arms without slowing.

"It's okay," he whispered.

"I've got you."

Emma clung to his neck instinctively.

For reasons she couldn't understand...

She felt safe.

Inside the cellar, Lily wrapped Emma in an old blanket.

The little girl stared at her.

"You smell familiar."

Lily froze.

Emma reached out and touched the silver pendant around Lily's neck.

"I used to dream about this."

Lily could no longer hold back.

She hugged her daughter tightly.

"I'm so sorry..."

Emma frowned.

"Why?"

"For missing your whole life."

The child gently wiped away Lily's tears.

"My teacher says crying means someone loves you very much."

Lily buried her face against Emma's hair.

Five years of grief melted into one overwhelming moment of love.

Outside, the gunfire suddenly stopped.

An eerie silence followed.

Then a woman's voice echoed through loudspeakers.

Elegant.

Cold.

Unmistakable.

Helena.

"Adrian..."

"You've always been predictable."

She stepped out of the lead SUV wearing a white suit, as though attending another society gala instead of an armed assault.

"You finally found your daughter."

She smiled.

"Unfortunately..."

"You won't be taking her home."

Adrian emerged from behind the cottage, his pistol lowered but his eyes burning with fury.

"You murdered an innocent man."

"You stole my child."

"You destroyed five years of our lives."

Helena laughed softly.

"I gave that child a future."

"You would have ruined everything."

Adrian took one step forward.

"No."

"You ruined everything."

Helena's smile slowly disappeared.

Then she delivered the confession no one had expected.

"You still don't understand why I did it."

She looked directly at Emma, hidden in the cellar below.

"That little girl..."

"...is the legal heir to the Whitmore Foundation."

"The moment she was born, every clause in your grandfather's will changed."

"If she lived..."

"You lost control of billions."

"If she disappeared..."

"I inherited the empire."

The world seemed to stop.

Even Helena's own mercenaries exchanged stunned looks.

She had just confessed.

Not out of guilt.

But out of pride.

Adrian quietly touched the recording device hidden inside his jacket.

Every word...

Had been captured.

May you like

Helena had no idea.

To be continued...
