CHAPTER 5 — THE LITTLE GIRL WITH THE SILVER LOCKET

CHAPTER 5 — THE LITTLE GIRL WITH THE SILVER LOCKET
The funeral for Dr. Marcus Reed was held three days later.
It was small.
Quiet.
Respectful.
Officially, the police called his death a tragic drive-by shooting.
Adrian knew better.
Someone had eliminated the only witness willing to speak.
As the final prayer ended, Adrian noticed an elderly woman standing alone beneath an oak tree.
She wore a faded gray coat despite the summer heat.
She never approached the coffin.
She only watched.
When the cemetery began to empty, she finally walked toward him.
"Mr. Whitmore?"
Adrian nodded.
"I'm Eleanor Brooks."
The name meant nothing to him.
"It should," she replied softly.
"I was the night supervisor at St. Catherine's Hospital five years ago."
Lily's breath caught.
"You were there..."
Eleanor nodded.
"I've wanted to tell the truth for years."
"Why now?"
She looked toward Dr. Reed's grave.
"Because Marcus died trying to protect it."
The three of them sat inside Adrian's car while security guarded every entrance to the cemetery.
Eleanor removed an old leather notebook from her handbag.
"I kept copies."
"Copies of what?" Adrian asked.
"The records Helena thought she destroyed."
Inside were handwritten nursing notes.
Medication logs.
Infant identification numbers.
Every page had been hidden for years.
One note made Adrian stop breathing.
Infant Female — ID #4729
Mother: Lily Monroe
Condition: Healthy
Transferred by authorization of Helena Whitmore.
Below the note was one more sentence, scribbled in trembling handwriting.
Receiving Guardian: Grace Holloway.
Lily stared at the name.
"Who is Grace Holloway?"
Eleanor slowly shook her head.
"I never met her."
"I only know she arrived just before sunrise carrying legal guardianship papers."
"They looked official."
"But something felt terribly wrong."
Adrian immediately handed the notebook to his investigation team.
Within an hour they had their first lead.
Grace Holloway.
Forty-six years old.
Former pediatric nurse.
Widowed.
No criminal record.
She had disappeared from public records four years earlier.
Then another investigator looked up.
"Sir..."
"What?"
"We found a recent utility bill."
Everyone leaned closer.
Grace Holloway wasn't missing.
She lived in a quiet coastal town nearly four hundred miles away.
Adrian stood.
"We're leaving now."
By sunset, Adrian, Lily, and six members of his security team arrived outside a modest white cottage overlooking the ocean.
It was nothing like the Whitmore estate.
A tiny flower garden surrounded the porch.
Children's bicycles leaned against the fence.
Colorful wind chimes danced in the sea breeze.
Lily's hands trembled.
"I don't know why..."
She whispered.
"...but my heart is racing."
Adrian gently squeezed her hand.
"So is mine."
Before anyone reached the front door...
Laughter floated through an open window.
A little girl's laughter.
Bright.
Carefree.
The sound froze both parents.
Lily slowly walked toward the window.
Inside...
A little girl with long dark curls sat on the living room floor drawing pictures with crayons.
She couldn't have been older than five.
Around her neck...
Hung half of a silver heart pendant.
Lily gasped.
"No..."
Her knees nearly gave out.
Adrian caught her before she fell.
The little girl looked toward the window.
For one brief second...
Their eyes met.
She smiled politely.
Then waved.
Completely unaware that the two strangers outside were staring at the child they had mourned for five years.
The front door opened.
An older woman stepped outside.
Her face turned pale the moment she saw Adrian.
"I knew this day would come."
"You must be Grace Holloway."
She nodded.
"I am."
Adrian's voice remained calm.
"Is that my daughter?"
Grace closed her eyes.
"...Yes."
Lily broke into uncontrollable sobs.
Grace looked devastated.
"I never wanted to keep her from you."
"Then why did you?"
"Because I was told you'd both be dead."
Silence.
Adrian frowned.
"What?"
"Helena told me powerful people wanted the baby eliminated."
"She begged me to protect her."
"She said the safest way was to disappear forever."
Lily whispered,
"She lied to everyone..."
Grace nodded with tears in her eyes.
"She manipulated all of us."
Just then...
The little girl skipped onto the porch carrying her drawing.
"Grandma Grace?"
She stopped.
Looking curiously at Adrian and Lily.
"Who are they?"
Grace's lips trembled.
She couldn't answer.
The little girl smiled anyway.
"Hi."
"My name is Emma."
Lily collapsed into Adrian's arms.
Emma.
The name she had whispered to her newborn before the nurses carried her away.
Grace stared at Lily in disbelief.
"You remembered..."
Lily nodded through tears.
"I've called her Emma every day in my prayers."
The little girl looked confused.
"Why are you crying?"
May you like
No one could answer.
Because how could anyone explain to a five-year-old that her parents had finally found her?
