CHAPTER 2 — THE SECRET THAT STOPPED THE MUSIC

CHAPTER 2 — THE SECRET THAT STOPPED THE MUSIC

The silence spread through the mansion faster than the music ever had.

One by one, conversations in the ballroom died.

Champagne glasses froze halfway to smiling lips.

Someone near the orchestra whispered, "Did he just throw Helena out?"

No one dared answer.

Because no one had ever seen Adrian Whitmore raise his voice inside his own home.

Not once.

Until tonight.

Helena forced a laugh.

It sounded hollow.

"Adrian, don't embarrass yourself over a woman you barely know."

Adrian didn't even blink.

"I said..."

His voice became quieter.

"...leave."

The security staff standing near the ballroom doors exchanged nervous looks.

For years they had obeyed Helena's instructions almost as often as Adrian's.

She practically ruled the estate.

Now they didn't know whose order mattered.

Helena noticed their hesitation.

"You all work for this family," she snapped.

"No," Adrian interrupted.

"They work for me."

He turned toward the head of security.

"Escort Mrs. Whitmore outside."

Every face in the room changed.

Mrs. Whitmore?

Not Mother.

Not Helena.

Not even Family.

For the first time in years...

She was being treated like a stranger.

Helena's elegant mask cracked.

"You cannot humiliate me like this in front of investors."

"I already watched you humiliate someone innocent."

Adrian's eyes were ice.

"Now we're even."

Two guards slowly stepped forward.

Helena stared at them in disbelief.

"You wouldn't dare."

Neither answered.

One quietly held the front door open.

She looked around the ballroom, searching for support.

None came.

Executives lowered their eyes.

Politicians pretended to check their phones.

Socialites suddenly found the ceiling fascinating.

No one wanted to stand against Adrian Whitmore.

Not tonight.

As Helena passed Lily, she leaned close enough that no one else could hear.

"This isn't over."

Her whisper carried poison.

"You still don't know what really happened five years ago."

Lily's heartbeat stumbled.

Five years.

The hospital.

The rain.

The baby.

The documents.

The memory slammed into her chest so hard she nearly lost her balance.

Helena smiled.

Then she walked out.

The massive front doors closed behind her.

The sound echoed through the mansion like a gunshot.

Adrian slowly faced the hundreds of guests.

"I apologize."

His voice filled every corner.

"My birthday celebration has ended."

Someone laughed nervously.

Thinking he was joking.

He wasn't.

"If you're here because you respect me..."

He paused.

"...you'll respect my decision."

Within minutes the orchestra packed their instruments.

Servers stopped carrying champagne.

Luxury cars began leaving the circular driveway one after another.

News spread through the city before the last guest reached the gates.

Adrian Whitmore had ended his own birthday party because of a woman wearing a kitchen apron.

Inside the now-empty ballroom...

Lily stood awkwardly beside the marble staircase.

"I should go."

Adrian looked at her as if she had spoken another language.

"Go?"

"I've already caused enough trouble."

"You didn't cause this."

She looked away.

"I always do."

The sadness in those four words hit Adrian harder than any business loss he'd ever experienced.

Who had convinced this woman that existing was a burden?

He gently handed her a clean handkerchief.

She hesitated before accepting it.

"Thank you."

"You've thanked me three times in ten minutes."

She gave a tiny, exhausted smile.

"I wasn't expecting kindness."

Something twisted painfully inside Adrian.

He studied her more carefully now.

The bruises hidden beneath makeup.

The faded scar near her wrist.

The calluses on hands that should never have belonged to someone so young.

This wasn't simply a woman having a bad night.

This was someone who had survived years of hardship.

"What exactly happened here before I arrived?"

Lily opened her mouth.

Closed it.

She couldn't.

Not because she wanted to protect Helena.

Because she had spent years learning that telling the truth only made life worse.

The oldest housekeeper finally stepped forward.

Mrs. Agnes had worked for the Whitmore family for nearly forty years.

Her voice trembled.

"Sir..."

Adrian turned.

"What is it?"

She swallowed.

"I need to tell you something."

Helena had ordered every employee into the kitchen almost an hour before the guests arrived.

She claimed there had been a staffing emergency.

But there wasn't.

Instead...

She singled out Lily.

Made her remove her evening dress.

Forced her into a stained servant's uniform.

Then handed everyone their phones.

"No one helps her."

"If anyone speaks to Mr. Whitmore..."

"...you're fired."

Several employees lowered their heads in shame.

One young waiter quietly wiped away tears.

"We wanted to stop it," he admitted.

"But she said you approved it."

Adrian's jaw tightened.

"I never even knew Lily was here."

Mrs. Agnes nodded.

"I believe that now."

Lily felt the room spinning.

She hadn't expected anyone to defend her.

Certainly not strangers.

Her voice cracked.

"You don't have to lose your jobs because of me."

Mrs. Agnes looked directly at her.

"My dear..."

"Some jobs aren't worth keeping if silence is the price."

For the first time that night...

Lily cried for a different reason.

Adrian slowly approached.

"Lily..."

She finally met his eyes.

"When you said..."

He struggled to finish the sentence.

"...that you're the mother of my daughter..."

The room froze again.

Every employee stopped breathing.

Lily closed her eyes.

"I never wanted to tell you like this."

"Then why now?"

"Because she left me no choice."

She reached into the pocket of the soaked apron.

Everyone watched.

Her fingers shook so violently she almost dropped what she was holding.

A tiny silver necklace.

Attached to it...

Half of a broken heart pendant.

Adrian stared.

His face drained of color.

Impossible.

His hand instinctively reached beneath his shirt.

Slowly...

He pulled out another necklace.

The other half.

The two broken pieces fit together perfectly.

Mrs. Agnes gasped.

One of the maids covered her mouth.

Lily whispered through tears,

"You gave me yours the night our daughter was born."

Adrian's breathing became uneven.

"I searched for you."

"I know."

"I searched every hospital."

"I know."

"I hired investigators."

"I know."

His voice broke.

"Then why did they tell me..."

Lily looked toward the front door where Helena had disappeared.

"...because someone paid them to lie."

Adrian felt the floor disappear beneath him.

Everything he believed for the last five years...

Every report.

Every document.

Every official record.

Could all have been fabricated.

Then Lily whispered the sentence that made his blood run cold.

"Our daughter isn't dead, Adrian."

A stunned silence engulfed the mansion.

Lily clutched the pendant against her chest.

May you like

"She's alive."

"And Helena has known where she is... this entire time."
